The report released by Cole Pepper last week proved to be false as the Jaguars hired former Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker as the replacement for Greg Williams. Jack Del Rio will not be both the head coach and defensive coordinator next season but you can bet that we will be feeling the pressure to succeed.
Personally I don’t like this hire. I don’t like what Mel Tucker did in Cleveland last year and I don’t see how he is going to turn around an underperforming Jaguars defense. Time will tell and ultimately Jack Del Rio will suffer the consequences.

There was a few things going on over the last week with the Jaguars’ defensive coaching staff. The staff has been at the Senior Bowl coaching the South team this week, most noticeably without defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson. Last week, as reported here, the Jaguars interviewed Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker for what we thought was the defensive coordinator position. Now it is apparent that Mel Tucker will take over as defensive backs coach and Jack Del Rio will be his own defensive coordinator. I have heard of head coaches being their own offensive coordinator but outside of Wade [...]
The Jaguars signed team captain, back up full back and special teams leader Montell Ownes to a contract extension yesterday. Montell Owens excelled last season on Special Teams and scored two touchdowns, most memorably a 40 yard fake punt run. He was name to Peter King’s All Pro Team and the USA Today’s All Joe Team.
This author is glad to see the Jaguars keep a hard working, intelligent player on the roster. If we had a few more players like Montell Owens on the team, we wouldn’t be talking about chemistry and effort at the end of the season.
I took a look around the web today to see who all the mock drafts had the Jaguars picking in the upcoming draft. This is assuming they stay at the number 8 spot which I could easily see them trading down to avoid a high rookie salary. Now, in my mock draft last week, I had OT Michael Oher from Ole Miss falling to us. If he is there I have no doubt we will take him but the big question is whether or not someone else will take him first. Let’s begin the rundown:
thehazean.com - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

#
Team
Pick
1
Detroit Lions
(0-16)
QB Matt Stafford, Georgia
The Lions need a QB and with Bradford pulling out of the draft they are only left with 2 options; Stafford and Sanchez and I think they will go with the more experienced QB.
2
St. Louis Rams
(2-14)
OT Andre Smith, Alabama
The Rams missed out on Jake Long last year and need to find a replacement for the aging Orlando Pace. Andre Smith is the premier tackle in this year’s draft.
3
Kansas City Chiefs
(2-14)
DE Brian Orakpo, Texas
The Chiefs are one of the hardest teams to figure out at the top of the draft. They have a new GM and will [...]
There were two things that the Jacksonville Jaguars were known for. A strong running game and a hard hitting defense. Neither of those things existed this year so it really a surprise to see some one get cut because of it? We already knew that Gregg Williams was shopping around. Now we know what team he will be going to. Gregg Williams will be replacing the spot of Gary Gibbs as the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator.
The Saints allowed 339.5 yards per game last year, ranking them 23rd in the NFL. Unfortunately, going by pure stats alone, they are not [...]
Yes, we knew that Gene Smith was taking over Shack Harris’s spot in the Jaguars’ front office. Being Vice President of Player Personnel is a really lofty title. However, what does that mean? Does it mean you get to help draft underachieving players and sign underachieving free agents? Does it mean a power balance of three between the owner, the head coach and the VP? That is what it meant under Shack Harris. With Gene Smith taking the new job, fans were left to wonder what role he would actually play.
Well, we shall no longer wonder. Today, Gene Smith was promoted to [...]
The search for a new Defensive Coordinator is under way in Jacksonville as it is pretty apparent that Greg Williams will not seek to renew his contract. The first person interviewed by the Jaguars, as reported by NFL Network’s Adam Schefter, is Cleveland Browns’ Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker.
Wait…
The Cleveland Browns’ Defensive Coordinator?
The same Cleveland Browns who finished 26th in the NFL last season in total defense and 30th in total sacks? I hate to say it but I hope the Jaguars are just trying to satisfy the league’s requirement to interview minority candidates because to hire the Defensive Coordinator of the [...]

Jaguars 2009 Resolutions
January is the month for making resolutions (and then hoping and praying that you don’t break them). While I have some very standard resolutions myself (eat less, work out more, don’t die) the Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot to improve upon. And I mean a lot. So what are their resolutions for the upcoming 2009 season? I have spared them the trouble of thinking it up themselves by making my very own, super informed and some what bitter list for the Jaguars to think about in this very, very long off season ahead of us.
Get a better conditioning coach. The [...]
