Without a doubt, Trevor Lawrence is one big reason the Jacksonville Jaguars are 4-2 going into their BYE. Even in the 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans and despite slippery field conditions, the sixth-year quarterback came through, completing 58.5 percent of his throws for 306 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. His Week 6 showing wasn't an outlier, though.

Lawrence has consistently put together strong performances throughout the season and is quietly building a compelling case to be in the thick of the MVP race.

Trevor Lawrence has joined the MVP conversation

Six games into the season, the MVP conversation is taking shape. Josh Allen remains at the top with odds of +200, via DraftKings Sportsbook. Brock Purdy is second at +220, and Patrick Mahomes is behind him at +850. Guess who's fourth? That's right, Trevor Lawrence at +1000.

Granted, there's a wide gap between Allen and Lawrence, but the Jaguars quarterback is there. Usually, the race heats up in the second half of the season, so he'll have a chance to work his way up. Already, he's got a strong case.

Lawrence's 14 passing touchdowns lead the league, and he's currently the only quarterback with multiple games with four touchdowns or more. Even better, No. 16 is showing no signs of slowing down. Dating back to last season, he's completed 62.7 percent of his throws for 4,115 yards with 33 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions the last 17 games.

Keep in mind that Lawrence is also off to the strongest start to the season of his career. Before Week 6, he had never had more than nine touchdowns. He already has 14, as John Shipley of Sports Illustrated noted. With running back Bhayshul Tuten, rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher, and wide receiver Josh Cameron progressively getting bigger roles in the passing game, it's only fair to assume that the former Clemson Tiger will put up better numbers the rest of the year.

If that wasn't enough, Travis Hunter will be a bigger part of the offense moving forward, so Lawrence will have no shortage of weapons. For his part, head coach Liam Coen couldn't be more pleased with Lawrence's performance.

"Trevor gives me so much confidence on a weekly basis as a play caller, and the way that I think he's seeing it right now and playing," Coen told the local media after the loss to the Texans (5:53 mark).

When you add it all up, the sky is the limit for Lawrence and the Jacksonville offense.

The Jaguars need Trevor Lawrence to keep playing at a high level

Trevor Lawrence has done more than enough to be part of the MVP conversation, but he'll need to continue racking up stats, and the Jaguars will need to keep winning games to boost his case. Showing out in their three prime-time games against the Baltimore Ravens, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Pittsburgh Steelers would most definitely help, as they will get to play in the national spotlight.

On the other hand, there are a handful of factors beyond Lawrence's control that could define the MVP race. Specifically, other quarterbacks are playing at a high level, and if they don't slow down, the former Clemson Tiger will come up short.

For the time being, though, Trevor Lawrence should be thrilled about where his MVP case stands. If he builds momentum, though, he could cement it even more.
