One of the biggest storylines surrounding Trevor Lawrence in 2025 is whether he can at last become the player the Jacksonville Jaguars envisioned when they drafted him first overall in 2021. The good news is that he's as healthy as he's been in a while. Moreover, the former Clemson Tiger is headed in the right direction under Liam Coen's tutelage, and he'll have a chance to keep making strides when the Jags face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of the preseason.

Already, Coen said that everyone will suit up against Pittsburgh, and that includes Lawrence. Granted, he'll play only a series or two, but he'll need to show that his encouraging performance at the Jacksonville mock game wasn't an outlier but rather a sign of things to come. This begs the question, what storylines aside from No. 16's performance will be worth monitoring in the preseason opener? The following three come to mind.

How gets the edge on the safety battle for the spot next to Eric Murray

After signing a three-year deal with the Jags in free agency, Eric Murray is pretty much guaranteed to start. However, the spot next to him is still up for grabs, with Darnell Savage, Andrew Wingard, and Antonio Johnson locked in a three-way battle to seize it.

All three have a compelling case to get the nod, but they'll need to make a strong impression in the next three preseason games if they want to separate themselves from the bunch. They'll get a shot against the Steelers.

How does the 2nd-team Jaguars offensive line faces vs. the Steelers?

Outside of Chuma Edoga, who's looked good while lining up at right tackle and guard, no Jaguars backup on the offensive line has stood out in training camp. John Shipley of Sports Illustrated pointed out at the time that the second-string offensive line struggled against the starting defense at the mock game.

Week 1 of the preseason will offer the group a chance to show that they can be counted on if thrust into action.

How does Travis Hunter look in his quest to play two-ways for the Jaguars?

Several analysts, coaches, and players have said on the record that they doubt Travis Hunter can play corner and wide receiver at the NFL level long-term. The latest was Davante Adams, who says he hasn't seen anyone do it; therefore, nobody can do it.

So far, Hunter has done a good job of getting acclimated to the NFL while learning two positions. The Jaguars have done a good job of bringing him along. And he began to practice on both offense and defense in training camp.

The reigning Heisman Trophy will will get a chance to silence his doubters with an impressive outing against Pittsburgh in the opener. If he does manage to shine, it will be hard to argue that he can't play two ways.
