The Jacksonville Jaguars expect new head coach Liam Coen to fix the offense. Of course, he'll have more responsibilities, but he got the job, in big part, because of the success he had with Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. Just recently, Trevor Lawrence made an appearance in the Kay Adams show and talked about what the biggest difference will be with Coen at the helm.
During his sitdown with Kay Adams, Lawrence said that Coen's biggest inprint on the Jaguars offense will be noticeable in the running game.
"Just the run game. It's just a different obviously, there's going to be a lot of changes in verbiage and terminology, all those things, and the system is different," Lawrence responsed when Adams asked him what the biggest difference on offense will be. "But I think the run game and how it's built off that, his knowledge of how to set up the run game with the play action, screens. And then obviously, based on your drop backs and your shots down field. But the plan there, I'm really excited about how he's going to set it up and how we're going to game plan, and I feel really good with the staff."
Lawrence continued, Grant seems really, really smart. I've spent a little bit of time with him now, not a ton, but, he just seems really smart and like he's going to be able to really supplement and help Liam out as much as he needs to. And he's another mind and sounding board, and so many guys that are experienced and can really pour into make it a collaborative process. It's not just one guy doing what he thinks is best. It's a bunch of different minds, including myself, and trying to come up with the best plan for us."
Last season, Jacksonville ranked 26th in rushing yards and 20th in rushing touchdowns in spite of having a talented backfield tandem in Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne. The running game was so underwhelming that the coaching staff often chose to pass instead, which in turn made the offense one-dimensional and put additional pressure on the quarterbacks to win games.
Aside from an unimaginative scheme, the Jaguars had a hard time running the football because the offensive line couldn't block. As Michael DiRocco of ESPN revealed, their average of 2.13 yards per carry before contact was the second-worst in the league while they were the second-best team to create yards after contact. That was the result of not being able to create lanes up front.
Just stumbled across this weird Jaguars rushing stat: They're second-worst team in the league in yards per rush BEFORE first contact (2.13) and second-best in yards per rush AFTER first contact (2.18).

Fortunately, Coen showed in Tampa Bay last year that he can revive a moribund running game. Below is Lawrence's full exchange with Kay Adams. The comments about the offense start at the 10:36 mark.

How Liam Coen will help Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars running game
Even though Ben Johnson was the hottest candidate in the last coaching cycle, Liam Coen was no slouch. During his lone season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they were in the top 5 in both rushing and passing. He should enjoy similar success with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With the Buccacneers, Coen routinely used motions and different offensive packages to make sure his offense had whatever edge it could get.
Of course, the Jaguars will need to fix the offensive line. Working in their favor is that they could beef up the interior trenches in the draft. They'll have multiple picks in the third and fourth round.
It's also worth noting that Travis Etienne is entering a contract year, and his future in Duval is in doubt. If he leaves, the team's brass will need to find a potential replacement to ensure they have someone else besides Tank Bigsby in the backfield.
The bottom line is that Liam Coen will have his work cut out in 2025, but his success with the Bucs should give Jaguars fans a reason for optimism.
