Two-way star Travis Hunter has gotten lots of fanfare, and rightly so. He's a once-in-a-generational player who has the talent to change the course of a franchise. That said, it's easy to forget that the Jacksonville Jaguars already have a bona fide No. 1 receiver in Brian Thomas Jr., who took the league by storm in his rookie season. In a recent sitdown, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner says he's looking forward to joining forces with him.
Hunter had a one-on-one interview with Kainani Stevens from the team's official website and said that he's familiar with Thomas and Trevor Lawrence, pointing out that he's previously watched him and Trevor Lawrence play.
"I definitely followed Jacksonville a lot because I love Brian Thomas," Hunter told Stevens. "Yeah, I felt like he was a slept-on receiver, so I watched a lot of him, you know. I know Trevor Lawrence. I definitely watch a lot of Trevor Lawrence but yeah, I definitely watch my boy Jarrian Jones. He plays here on the defensive side of the ball."
Hunter will give the Jaguars offense a much needed boost and round out a receiving corps that includes Thomas, Parker Washington, Dyami Brown, and Gabe Davis.
This isn't the first time that Hunter has stated that he's spoken about the possibility of suiting up for the Black & Teal. Back in 2022, he said he hoped he was drafted as the No. 1 pick.
"Ain't gone play yet, but hopefully get a great outcome," Hunter said on video posted on ESPN. "First time playing on the Jacksonville field. Hopefully, I get drafted one cause they're gonna have a top pick in the future."
The person filming the video says that he's disrespecting Jacksonville, and in a way, he kind of did, as he was wishing the Jags held a high pick, and to accomplish that, they needed to lose lots of games. Fast forward to 2024, and they clinched the No. 5 overall selection. Then again, the team's brass knew that they would miss out on him if they stayed up, so they pulled off a bold trade to move up to select the West Palm Beach, Florida native.
Travis Hunter along with Brian Thomas Jr. will give the Jaguars a 1-2 punch at WR
The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't had two dominant receivers on the roster at the same time since Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell. Sure, you could make the case that both Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson tallied over 1,000 receiving yards in 2015, but outside of that year, their success wasn't sustainable. Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr. will give Trevor Lawrence a pair of dynamic weapons and, at last, provide the stability the Jags have missed at the position.
Granted, Hunter may not take on a feature role as a rookie and may not reach the 1,000-yard mark, especially when you take into account that Dyami Brown is in the mix. That said, his presence will make things easier for Thomas, as the defense will no longer be able to devote so many resources to slow him down.
It's also worth noting that Thomas is coming off a productive season despite the fact that the offense was unimaginative and was catching passes from Mac Jones for nearly half of the year. With Lawrence back in the mix and on Liam Coen's new system, the former LSU Tiger should pick up where he left off.
The new regime knew that Brian Thomas is a game-changer, but Trevor Lawrence needed more weapons aside from him. Travis Hunter is that missing piece of the puzzle.
