The Jacksonville Jaguars have enough cap space to make a handful of signings in free agency after moving on from a handful of players. While the cornerback position and the offensive line may be their priority, they should also strongly consider bolstering their pass rush. In fact, making a run for outside linebacker Harold Landry III would make sense following the news that the Tennessee Titans are moving on from him.
The Titans are cutting Landry just a few days ahead of free agency. He was set to count $24.1 million against the cap in 2025 but his release frees up $10.9 million in space or $17.5 million if he's designated a post-June 1 cut.
The news came as a bit of a surprise because Tennessee had granted Landry permission to seek a trade just a few days ago. Then again, it's possible that there was no market for his services, so the Titans might've chosen to go ahead and cut ties with him.
A second-round pick in the 2018 draft, Landry was one of Tennessee's longest-tenured players after the 2024 season, appearing in 98 games with 79 starts and registering 50.5 sacks and 397 tackles.
Following an impressive 2021 campaign in which the former Boston College Eagle logged 12 sacks, he signed a five-year deal worth $87 million. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL just before the 2022 season and missed the whole year.
After his injury, Landry wasn't nearly as explosive but remained a productive player, registering a combined 19 sacks the past two years. He should have no shortage of suitors now that teams don't have to give up compensation in exchange for his services.
Why it would make sense for the Jaguars to sign Harold Landry III
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a pair of pass rushers in Travon Walker and Josh HInes-Allen but need a No. 3 to round out their rotation. Arik Armstead filled that role last year but he's going back to defensive tackle, where he's the most effective, in 2025. That leaves a void the team's brass will need to fill.
The Jags will have several options in free agency and the draft to bolster the pass rush. Harold Landry would make sense because he's still playing at a high level even after suffering the knee injury in 2022. In fact, his availability shouldn't be a cause of concern, as he's appeared in all 32 games the past two years.
Given that the Jags are slated to have around $60 million in space, they should have no trouble meeting Landry's contract demands. Then again, he won't probably command a top-market salary following his release. The only thing that may prevent Jacksonville from signing the veteran pass rusher is that he would have a complementary role behind Walker and Hines-Allen. He could be looking for starting opportunities and won't get them with the Jags.
The truth is that landing Harold Landry would be great, but it's uncertain if the Jacksonville Jaguars want to fortify their pass rush in free agency. If the do, they should waste no time giving him a call.
