The Jacksonville Jaguars have done a good job of beefing up the trenches this offseason. The Houston Texans have also made several attempts to upgrade C.J. Stroud's protection up front, but have mostly come up short. In fact, they recently signed a left tackle the Jags gave up on last year.

Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports that Houston is signing former Jags left tackle Cam Robinson. This is the latest of several moves the Texans have made this offseason to improve their offensive line. The issue is that most of them have left much to be desired. Diana Russinni of The Athletic later reported that the contract is for one year and is worth $12 million with a max value of $14.5 million.

Houston had a void at left tackle after trading Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders. For a brief moment, it looked like Titus Howard was going switch from sides, but it looks like he'll stay on the right edge after the Robinson signing.

Apart from Tunsil, the Texans also traded offensive guard Kenyon Green and released Shaq Mason. To replace them, they signed Laken Tomlinson and sent a sixth-round pick in 2026 to Minnesota in exchange for Ed Ingram.

Last season, Stroud was sacked an alarming 52 times. While the Houston brass deserves praise for trying to improve his protection, the truth is that the end result leaves much to be desired.

Cam Robinson is a fine left tackle, but wasn't good enough to stay with the Jaguars

Make no mistake, Cam Robinson is a good, not great, left tackle, and in a league where the demand at the position outweighs the supply, that's more than enough. Having said that, the Houston Texans shouldn't set high expectations for the former Alabama product based on his stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A second-round in the 2017 draft, Robinson a mainstay of the Jaguars offensive line until he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings before the deadline last year. He was never a Pro Bowl-caliber talent but more than held his own. On the other hand, he always lacked consistency. For instance, the Monroe, Louisiana native gave up the highest one-on-one pressure rate among all offensive tackles during his brief stint in Minneapolis.

He wasn't much better during his stint in Jacksonville. In three of his four first NFL seasons, Robinson gave allowed 40 sacks or more. Surprisingly, the past regime used the franchise tag to keep him from leavin in 2021. He got the tag for the second time in 2022 but ended up signing a three-year deal worth $54 million.

This raised eyebrows across the league because the Jags were paying Robinson like an upper-echelon left tackle despite the fact that they had 2021 second-round pick Walker Little waiting under his wing.

In the end, Robinson never lived up to his contract, and the Jags accepted the mistake when they moved on from him last year. Now, the Texans will find out why their division foe let him walk.
