There's no doubt that Trevor Lawrence has struggled at times, but he's shown notable improvement under head coach Liam Coen. Heck, he was a big reason the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. Don't tell that to a Seattle Seahawks reporter, though.
Just before the game, Ian D Furness of 93.3 KJR said that Lawrence was his team's biggest weakness. Jags fans caught wind of his comments and didn't let him have none of it.
Seahawks reporter argues everybody knows Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence is bad
Ian D Furness made an appearance on 1010 XL and said that everyone knew that Lawrence was a weak less, going as far as asking hosts Mike Dempsey and Tony Smith whether the fifth-year quarterback drove them insane. To his surprise, his comments elicited a blank stare.
"Quarterback, simple. Quarterback, your guy's not very good," Furness responded when asked what the Jags' biggest weakness was ahead of Week 6."
Furness might've thought that Dempsey and Smith were going to agree with him, but when both of them simply asked, "You think so?" He came up with a world salad to justify his baffling take.
Moreover, it looks like Furness knew at that moment that he had stepped in it because he began to sound hesitant. Here's the rest of his response.
"Yeah, I think the whole league knows that. I'm sorry. I hate this. I hate to be that guy, but I mean, this I
I think the whole league knows that. I'm sorry. I hate to be that guy, but I mean, I don't know, he's, he's an odd dude, man. Like, there's so much there, you think, but you know, I don't know. I just think Sam's a little bit better right now. And I'm... Lawrence has just got to be an enigma for you guys, isn't he? Like he's got to drive you guys crazy at times," Furness.
"He wins a big game, but boy, just as easily, he could have lost that game the other day. And your defense is scary, like, there's no doubt. Like, that's a, that's a, that's a big time defense. You know, I think watching Monday night, we all watch with great, you know, anticipation up here, if you guys didn't get, you know, Kansas City Chiefs a few times on some calls, I'm still trying to figure out how that wasn't passing."
For the sake of transparency, let's clear up a few misconceptions. The Chiefs, not the Jags, should have been flagged at least three times, but didn't. In fact, Jacksonville managed to call in spite of having to overcome bad calls from the refs.
Circling back to Furness' remarks, you can see that once he was asked to back up his claim, he had nothing and instead pivoted to saying that Sam Darnold was better than Trevor Lawrence.
And while Furness is right that Darnold has been playing well, the focus at that moment was the Seahawks' biggest matchup advantage, now their biggest strength.
That's not the argument you would bring up if you really thought that the consensus thought Lawrence was dreadful. That's not the case, which is why he felt the heat when the segment was about to end.
"Well, hopefully our garbage quarterback can manage to somehow show up on Sunday and find the stadium, and you're about to make it real personal down here in Duval," Dempsey said.
You can then hear a Furness laugh nervously in the background, and rightly so. The whole exchange is a delicacy. His remarks about Lawrence start at the 2:38 mark:
The Jaguars are pleased with Trevor Lawrence thus far
Ian D Furness more or less realized he made a mistake, as he took to Twitter to say that he just found out how passionate Jags are. He got ratioed on that message, meaning that he got more negative responses and quote Tweets than likes.
Now, this isn't a case of fans blindly supporting the Jaguars or Trevor Lawrence. If that were the case, Furness wouldn't have gotten as much backlash. The issue is that he made uneducated comments and quickly found out that he hadn't done enough due diligence.
And that's the thing, Lawrence got off to a slow start in 2025 and has been inconsistent throughout his career. That said, he's played well against the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Given that the Seattle Seahawks are next on their schedule, those are the relevant and most performances the Hawks and the media should be paying attention to.
Ultimately, even the best reports make mistakes, but if the Seahawks overlook the Jags the way Ian D Furness did, they will be in trouble in Week 6.
