The preseason gives fringe players a chance to make their case for a roster spot. Cornerback Tre Flowers certainly made the most of his in the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Oklahoma State product had a strong performance for the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 of the preseason. Pro Football Focus took notice and gave him an illustrious distinction.

Mark Chichester of PFF did a recap of the win over the Bucs and named Flowers the player of the game, pointing out that the veteran cornerback excelled in coverage.

"Jaguars cornerback Tre Flowers played 33 snaps on Saturday night, 20 of which were spent in coverage. He was targeted five times but gave up only two catches for 9 yards and no first downs. He forced two incompletions, tallied one defensive stop and gave up just a 47.9 passer rating when targeted."

Flowers' 33 defensive snaps were the fifth most for Jacksonville. Linebacker Andrew Parker led the way with 44. Adrian Amos was second with 40, followed by safety Erick Hallett II with 37. Cornerback Tevaughn Campbell's 35 logged snaps were fourth on the team.

It's worth noting that all these players are currently on the outside looking in and got playing time because the coaching staff decided to sit their starters after seeing them get lots of work in a controlled environment in joint practices.

Rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones did log 32 snaps but that's because the Jaguars expect him to be the primary backup at cornerback and potentially get a featured job down the role. At this stage of his development, the former Florida State Seminole benefits from all the snaps he can get.

Tre Flowers is competing for a roster spot with the Jaguars in 2024

A fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, Tre Flowers signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year. He played 47 games with 40 starts for the Hawks and was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals midseason in 2021. The Texas native then joined the Atlanta Falcons last year and went on to appear in 17 games with three starts.

In total, Flowers has appeared in 90 games with 44 starts throughout his career, registering four interceptions, 22 passes defensed, and six forced fumbles. He's reunited in Jacksonville with defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, who held the same position with Atlanta last year. Currently, the veteran cornerback faces an uphill battle to make the team.

Tyson Campbell, who signed a top-market contract in the offseason, and Ronald Darby are the starters. Rookie Jarrian Jones has made progress in the offseason and is poised to contribute in 2024.

Montaric Brown and sophomore Christian Braswell are also in the mix, possibly leaving just one spot up for grabs. If that's the case, Flowers must show that he brings more to the table than rookie Deantre Prince.

Having said that, there's still one preseason game left. Flowers will have a chance to make one last impression before roster cutdown day. He's got his work cut out but if he plays like he did against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he might have a shot.
