Mac Jones is having the time of his life during Jaguars OTAs
Trevor Lawrence is the talk of the town during Jacksonville Jaguars Organized Team Activities. However, fellow quarterback Mac Jones has also gotten the spotlight a couple of times during offseason activities. Most recently, he's going viral for participating in a ball-security deal.
Jones was caught on film performing a drill that helps players secure the football. In the clip, via Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union, you can see him celebrate and have fun.
Jones is QB2 behind Trevor Lawrence. A first-round pick in 2021, he made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. However, the New England Patriots failed to put him in a position to succeed, making questionable coaching changes. Throughout his stint in Foxboro, the former Alabama standout got benched several times. By the end of 2023, his confidence had been severely affected and after the season ended, he became the subject of trade chatter.
Even though he showed he could play, Jones didn't have a strong market. The Jaguars were the only team interested in acquiring him and they got him in exchange for a sixth-round pick. In Jacksonville, the fourth-year quarterback will have a chance to rebuild his stock.
Besides having the chance to take a step back and hone his skills, Jones will have an opportunity to show clubs that he can play if Lawrence suffers an injury in the regular season. The Jaguars would most likely want to avoid that scenario but they traded for Jones for that exact reason.
Jaguars QB Mac Jones just wants to have fun
Mac Jones, a Jacksonville native, is thrilled to have landed with the Jaguars, the team he rooted for growing up. Earlier in OTAs, he said that he's just trying to have fun after his tumultuous stint with the Patriots.
"I'm looking at it as just go out there and have fun, enjoy the game, and be the best player I can be and the best teammate I can be," Jones said when he was asked how he's handling the quarterback competition with C.J. Beathard. "Take all my experiences, good and bad. The best people learn from that.
"I thought, and I feel like there were some experiences I could've done better learning from, and maybe wouldn't happen again. So definitely realize that, definitely want to focus on moving forward, and like you said, eventually you never know what happens. When your time comes, you've got to be ready. You never know. That's what I've learned."
Here's Jones' full interview with Justin Barney of News4Jax:
While the Jags haven't officially named Jones the top backup behind Trevor Lawrence, it would be shocking if he isn't once the official depth chart is released. If the team's brass were higher on C.J. Beathard, they wouldn't have upgraded their quarterback room.
All things considered, being traded to the Jaguars was the best thing that could've happened to Mac Jones. So far, he's making the most of his chance and is having fun while he's at it.
