Jaguars turn official release of throwback uniforms into celebration
This year is the 30th anniversary of the Jacksonville Jaguars becoming an NFL franchise, and they're celebrating accordingly. They announced the return of their throwback uniforms earlier this year, and they've now officially released them.
The Jags announced the throwbacks with a video of cornerback Tyson Campbell and safety Andre Cisco with team legend Leon Searcy.
The same day they released the video, the Jaguars made the Prowler uniforms, the ones they wore in the early days of the team, available in their official store. Attendance to the event was off the roof. Here's a video of fans waiting in line, via Marcel Robinson of Action News Jax.
A fan was so eager that he showed up at 9:00 p.m. the day prior. He got a shout-out from defensive end Josh Hines-Allen.
The Jaguars announced that they will be wearing the throwbacks when they play the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. This coincides with former head coach Tom Coughlin's induction into the Pride of the Jaguars, the team's Ring of Honor. The news was announced last year but the date had yet to be determined.
Coughlin will be joining inductees Mark Brunell, Jimmy Smith, Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor, and former owners Wayne and Dolores Weaver. Here are the pictures the Jaguars posted of current players wearing the Prowler jerseys.
Why is it a big deal that the Jaguars are wearing the Prowler jerseys?
Fans had been clamoring for the return of the throwbacks for years. Ultimately, the Jacksonville Jaguars couldn't have picked a better date to bring them back. They just announced their investment in renovations to EverBank Stadium. They are also coming off consecutive winning seasons, the first time they've achieved the feat since 2004-2005.
Moreover, the Jags are seemingly on the right track and are the most stable they've been in recent years. Early in the offseason, they locked up Trevor Lawrence and Josh Hines-Allen.
The Prowler uniforms were the first ones in team history, and since the Jaguars changed the design in 2019, they hadn't worn them. Coincidentally, they wore the Prowler jerseys when they made four consecutive trips to the playoffs and two AFC Championship appearances.
When you compare the throwbacks with other jerseys Jacksonville has worn, they're arguably the most remarkable. You could argue that the Color Rush are also distinct but they didn't have the same kind of reception other designs had. In fact, they're considered one of the worst jerseys not only in franchise history but in the NFL.
The release of the throwbacks should incentivize the Jacksonville Jaguars to bounce back after a disappointing end to 2023. After all, there's no better way to celebrate their 30th anniversary than winning like they did in the late 1990s while wearing the Prowler jerseys.
