Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence reveals ambitious goal after signing his new deal
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has officially signed the extension that will ensure he stays with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a long time. All things considered, the process was relatively smooth. Both sides seemingly wanted to get something done. Throughout the offseason, there were reports that talks were positive, so it felt like a matter of time before they struck a deal. They did, and Lawrence is now focused on bringing a championship to Duval.
Lawrence told the local media that the new deal not only sets him and his family financially but it also gives him long-term stability in Jacksonville.
"Financially, it's amazing and really sets us up for the future and for the rest of our lives. That's a huge blessing," Lawrence said regarding his new deal. "Obviously, it's a big deal. But I think even more than that is the stability of being here for the long term, however many years it ends up being. I guess it could be seven, however it ends up being, that's a long time."
"To be able to say we're going to be here and have confidence and know that, that means a lot to us and we'd love it here it's become home. My families love it families love visiting here. We've settled in this is this is home for us. We wanted to be here long term, it's a place we love to live in, and we know that because we had some good and some bad times, as far as football goes. We've experienced both and we love being here," Lawrence said.
Lawrence goes on to say that he feels confident about where the Jaguars are headed and adds that he wants to bring a championship to the city of Jacksonville.
"The way the organization is going and the directorial thing on the football side, that makes it a no-brainer for us. We're heading in the right direction and I want to be the quarterback, bring a championship to Jacksonville. That's my goal. I know that we can accomplish that. So I'm excited for that. And it just pairs up to where we happen to love living here too."
Later in the exchange, Lawrence brought up the coaching staff and many of the players on the roster as a reason for signing a contract that will keep him in Jacksonville for years.
"I love our head coach, coach Doug Pederson has done a great job. Press [Taylor] offensive coordinator, the staff that we have in place. I feel really confident in the system. I feel like every year, I've gotten better and better in the system. I know this year is a big year to keep improving. But I feel really confident in that. Like I said, just the overall team that we have, the leadership on the team as far as players."
Lawrence, the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is coming off a somewhat underwhelming season but he's also shown he can play at a high level. His biggest area of improvement in 2024 will be cutting down on the number of turnovers. Last year he had 21, the third most in the NFL. That said, the Jaguars' brass has been pleased with his progress in the offseason.
Both head coach Doug Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor say that he looks much better than he did last year. Moreover, the fourth-year quarterback is healthy after dealing with a myriad of ailments in 2023. Here's his full exchange with the media in light of signing his contract extension.
The Jaguars feel Trevor Lawrence can take them to the Super Bowl
Trevor Lawrence is the best quarterback the Jaguars have had since Mark Brunell. With a bit of time, he could be the best one in franchise history. That's why Jacksonville had no qualms about giving him a top-market extension, especially when you take into account that quarterback salaries are consistently going up.
Had the Jaguars waited after quarterbacks Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa go their contracts, the Jags might've probably had to pay Lawrence more. From their side of things, it didn't make sense to wait until next year to extend Lawrence because they already know he's their guy. By getting ahead of the curve and giving him a new deal now, they're saving themselves a few millions.
Trevor Lawrence had previously said that getting a new deal wasn't his priority. But now that he has checked off that box, he can fully zero in on helping the Jacksonville Jaguars get to the Super Bowl.
