Jaguars inactives for Week 4 against the Texans
Is it too early to press the panic button for the Jacksonville Jaguars in light of their underwhelming start to the 2024 NFL season? Maybe, maybe not, but they should most definitely be concerned. After all, they've lost three consecutive games and things won't get any easier when they face the Houston Texans in Week 4.
Currently, the Jags are a 6.0-point underdog for the game, and they haven't done enough the past three weeks to make you think that things will change. Heading into the contest, they're 30th in the league in points scored and rank 28th in points surrendered.
But despite a daunting matchup in Week 4, Trevor Lawrence still believes the Jaguars can turn things around if they put in the work.
"Yeah, it can turn, it can turn quick," Lawrence told the local media Wednesday when asked if a spark could be of help. "And that's the thing, we just have to keep our head down and keep working, and like I said stay loose, have fun, keep flying around. Don't tighten up, don't try to force the issue on making that one play that turns it. Just let it come to you. It's kind of a mixture."
"The sense of urgency has to be there, this position we're in, but you also have to do your job, and you can't get outside of your of what your job is and your responsibilities, and try to do too much. I think it's a little bit of both, and we have to stay level-headed through all this and keep trusting the work that we're putting in. It's going to pay off for us. Unfortunately, it hasn't yet, and we haven't had much success the first three weeks, but I do believe that it will, and this is a great opportunity this week to get on track."
Lawrence is right but the Jags won't be able to defeat their divisional foes if they play like they have the past three games. Compounding the issue is that they'll be without several key contributors.
Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun was expected to miss a few games while he deals with plantar fasciitis. Originally, head coach Doug Pederson told the press corps early in the week that he didn't think the veteran was a candidate for Injured Reserve. However, something changed and the team announced they did place him on IR, meaning that he'll have to sit out at least four contests.
On top of that, the Jags will be without defensive back Darnell Savage when they face the Texans. The former first-round pick sustained a quad injury in the opener and has missed the past two games.
Besides announcing that Savage won't play against Houston, the team announced that they've signed tight end Josiah Deguara to the 53-man roster and promoted cornerback Christian Braswell and linebacker Tanner Muse to the active roster for Week 4 via standard elevation.
Pederson was optimistic about Savage's potential return against the Texans. However, he said Friday that he didn't have a great day in practice Thursday, so the team would wait and see if he would suit up. It looks like he's not ready to go. The former Maryland Terrapin was originally listed as questionable for Sunday but was downgraded to out Saturday.
Savage will join tight end Evan Engram on the sidelines. The latter suffered a hamstring injury during warmups in Week 2 and has yet to return. The silver lining is that Pederson believes he's trending toward playing against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. This begs the question, who will be inactive against the Texans? The full list is below.
