Jaguars fans shouldn't lose any sleep over Jamal Adams landing with the Titans
The Seattle Seahawks released safety Jamal Adams earlier this year. It took him a while but he's at last found a new home with the Tennessee Titans. The former All-Pro must still have some juice left but the Jacksonville Jaguars shouldn't get fidgety about him landing in the AFC South.
Tennessee announced they signed Adams to a one-year deal. He'll join a group of safeties that includes Amani Hooker and Elijah Holden.
A first-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2017 draft, Adams was a game-changer early in his career. That's why the Seahawks had no qualms about giving up a pair of first-round picks to acquire him in 2020. Unfortunately, they didn't get the return on the investment they expected.
It's true that Adams made the Pro Bowl in his first season with Seattle but that was pretty much it. Injuries prevented him from making an impact, and when he was able to suit up, he wasn't nearly as dominant as he was with the Jets. When you consider that the best ability is availability, the Hawks couldn't justify paying him $16.5 million to keep him around in 2024, so they released him in the offseason.
Having said that, the Titans needed help at safety, so they went ahead and took a chance on Adams. As of this writing, the terms of the agreement aren't available but it's fair to assume it won't be for a high amount.
The Titans haven't shied away from making big moves this offseason. Back in free agency, they signed center Lloyd Cushenberry to fortify the tranches and later outbid Jacksonville for wide receiver Calvin Ridley, giving him a four-year contract worth $92 million. Not long after, they traded for cornerback L'Jarius Sneed.
But as busy as Tennessee has been they're entering the 2024 season with relatively low expectations. Projected to finish last in the division, they have rookie head coach Brian Callahan leading the way. When you factor in that they don't know yet if Will Levis is the long-term answer at quarterback, they may need to wait one year or two before they are legitimate contenders for the AFC South crown.
Jamal Adams won't probably tip the scale in the Titans' favor
Injuries have limited Jamal Adams to 10 games the past two years but if he manages to recapture a fraction of his former self, he would be a solid addition to the Tennessee Titans. That said, staying healthy has proven to be healthy for him. The last time he played a full season was back in the distant year of 2018. Given his medical history, it's reasonable to assume he'll miss time in 2024.
Heck, even after signing Adams, the Tennessee secondary isn't particularly great. They have an intriguing cornerback trio in L'Jarius Sneed, Roger McCreary, and Chidobe Awuzie but their safety group leaves much to be desired.
After all, Amani Hooker isn't the kind of player offensive coordinators will spend the night before the game planning for, and Elijah Molden, who's listed as a safety on their depth chart, hasn't made much of note since the Titans drafted him in 2021. The depth behind them isn't that great either. Otherwise, they wouldn't have brought in Adams.
The bottom line is that the Jacksonville Jaguars cannot take the Tennessee Titans lightly in 2024 but that doesn't mean they'll suddenly turn into a threat after signing Jamal Adams.
