Jaguars duo of Travon Walker and Josh Allen join top pass rushers at Sack Summit
The Jacksonville Jaguars are taking a few weeks off before they report to training camp. However, Josh Allen and Travon Walker are taking advantage of the time off and honing their skills with the best pass rushers in the NFL.
Walker and Allen were some of the many pass rushers who attended this year's Sack Summit, an event where pass rushers get together and spread knowledge. Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Von Miller began the event in 2017.
Originally called the Von Miller Pass Rush Summit, he changed the name as other edge defenders have taken on the mantle. Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby was at the center stage of this year's edition.
Recognizing he's no longer in his prime, Miller recruited Cameron Jordan and Crosby to help him set this year's summit. "For those guys that have been coming here for years, it's giving them a piece of it, just to ensure the life of it," Miller said via The Athletic. "I don't know how many years I have left but Maxx? He's going to play another 10.
A group of nearly 60 pass rushers partook in this year's edition. Walker and Allen were among the attendees. Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp was also brought in to provide guidance. Brain Boldinger of NFL Media also showed up. He routinely breaks down offensive and defensive line performances and just posted a clip of Allen participating in drills.
Walker also posted a reel of the summit on Instagram.
The Jaguars are counting on Travon Walker and Josh Allen to build off of 2023
The Jaguars got off to a strong start in 2023 but ran out of gas by the end of the season. Their defense, in particular, faded down the stretch A top-10 unit early on, they were later unable to stop opposing teams from reaching the end zone.
Things got so bad that position groups weren't communicating with each other and alignments were no longer being discussed. The silver lining was that Travon Walker and Josh Allen were playing at a high level despite the defense struggles.
Allen had a breakout year, setting a new team record for sacks in a season with 17.5. He's now focused on becoming a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate. Walker, on the other hand, finished 2023 on a strong note, registering five sacks in the last four games to give him 10 for the year. They'll now be joined by defensive tackle Arik Armstead, one of Jacksonville's biggest acquisitions in free agency.
A first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers, Armstead has been one of the best defensive tackles in the league throughout his career. His presence in the middle will help Allen and Walker find more favorable matchups on the edges, which in turn should lead to better production.
When you factor in the arrival of defensive coordinator Ryan Neilsen, whose area of expertise is the defensive line, Walker and Allen will be in a position to make plays for the Jaguars in 2024.
The AFC South is stacked with game-changers at quarterback next season. The best way to counter them will be with a dominant pass rush. This means that Travon Walker and Josh Allen will be key to the Jags' success.
