5 players who won't be on the Jaguars 53-man roster come Week 1

The Jags have lots of depth at most position groups heading into the 2023 season. This will make it difficult for these five players to make the 53-man roster.

No. 3 player who won't be on the Jaguars roster come Week 1: Christian Braswell, CB

Cornerback was seen as one of the Jaguars' biggest needs throughout most of the offseason. However, they opted not to sign anyone in free agency or use an early-round pick at the position. It wasn't until they selected defensive back Antonio Johnson in Round 5, that they took action.

Not long after picking Johnson, the team's brass picked Erick Hallett II and Chris Braswell in Rounds 5 and 6, respectively. Whereas Hallett and Johnson are listed as safeties that have the ability to play nickel, Braswell has the size and skill set to line up in the slot.

Braswell tested well in this year's scouting combine, posting a 40-inch vertical and an 11-foot broad jump. At 5'11" and 185 pounds, Braswell has the tools to develop into a solid nickel. However, he might need to wait to get his shot, and that's because sophomores Montaric Brown and Gregory Junior had made huge progress since the end of the 2021 campaign. In particular, Junior has had an outstanding preseason and could eventually take away nickel duties from incumbent Tre Herndon.

The good news for Braswell is that he could follow a similar path to the one Junior underwent in his rookie year. A sixth-round pick in last year's draft, the Ouachita Baptist product didn't originally make the roster and spent a good chunk of the 2022 season honing his skills in the practice squad before he was ready to make an impact.

If Braswell lands in the practice squad, which seems like a likely outcome, he could work on his craft and be ready to contribute in 2023.
