5 Jaguars players who won't be back in 2024 after falling short of the playoffs
• They'll turn their attention to the offseason now
• Here are 5 players who won't return in 2024
3. Tre Herndon, cornerback
For a while, the Jaguars lacked talent and depth across the roster. Yet, there were a handful of players that routinely came through when called upon. One of them was Tre Herndon. An undrafted free agent in 2018, Herndon worked his way up the depth chart and joined the starting lineup when injuries depleted the cornerback room in 2019-2020.
Herndon has never been a Pro Bowl-caliber player but his flexibility to line up in the slot and the perimeter gives the coaching staff lots of flexibility. In retrospect, Herndon was one of former David Caldwell's best findings and you can tell how valuable was when a new regime took over and decided to keep him around.
Heading into the 2021 season, Herndon was set to man the slot but an MCL injury forced him to miss four games. He eventually returned but wasn't still at full strength, so he was sent to the sidelines. Still, the Jaguars gave him a new deal in 2022, and it paid off. The Vanderbilt product first replaced Shaquill Griffin and later moved to the slot, where he's at his best.
Following the 2022 season, the coaching staff once again gave Herndon a one-year deal. And once again, he came through in the slot. However, it looks like the Jaguars found a pair of potential replacements in Gregory Junior and Antonio Johnson, so the team's brass may decide it's time to move on from him. If he hits the open market, there will most definitely be demand for his services.
