No. 1 Jaguars surprise cut before the 53-man roster deadline: Josh Wells, OT

The Jaguars signed Josh Wells in the offseason with the expectations that he would provide depth at offensive tackle. The fact that left tackle Cam Robinson will serve a four-game suspension to start the season made Wells' presence even more valuable.

Wells, who's in his second stint in Jacksonville, has appeared in 95 games with 24 starts (nine of them with the Jaguars) over the last eight years. The James Madison product was slated to be the top backup at offensive tackle during Robinson's suspension. However, he hurt his abductor during joint practices with the Detroit Lions ahead of Week 2 of the preseason and needs more time to recover.

It's possible that Wells will be ready for the opener but if he isn't, the Jaguars could then decide to move on with him. Not long ago, head coach Doug Pederson told the media that if it were Week 1, the team would roll with Blake Hance as their swing tackle.

While there's a chance Jacksonville keeps both Wells and Hance, they could free up nearly $1 million in cap room if they release the latter. The decision could come up to how healthy and how much the Jags like Hance. Either way, Wells doesn't seem to be a lock to make the 53-man roster, at least from an outside perspective.
