3 players the Jacksonville Jaguars must target after 1st wave of free-agency frenzy
2. Clelin Ferrell, DE,49ers
The Las Vegas Raiders raised eyebrows when they drafted Clelin Ferrell fourth overall in 2019. While they paved the for the Jags to take Josh Allen three picks later, the decision was a head-scratcher at the time. A technician at Clemson, Ferrell was a non-factor in his first NFL season. Fellow rookie Maxx Crosby's early success made the pick look even worse.
Simply put, Ferrell was not a fit in Las Vegas, and after three seasons, he was given his walking papers. In retrospect, that might've been the best that could happen to him, as the San Francisco 49ers stepped in and claimed him as a reclamation project.
In the Bay Area, the Cle Missile wasn't under pressure to deliver and was able to thrive in a rotational role. He quickly improved and surprisingly became one of their best pass rushers. That's a great feat when you take into consideration that he was playing alongside Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave, but that showcased how dominant Ferrell was in the second half of the season.
Unfortunately, Ferrell missed time with a knee injury and his absence was noticeable. Sure, the Niners still managed to get to the Super Bowl but their pass rush suffered a steep decline. Now, Ferrell is a free agent and he should be on the Jaguars' radar.
Last year, Ferrell posted 3.5 sacks while playing just 43 percent of San Francisco's offensive snaps. The Jags could surely use that kind of production from their third pass rusher. Moreover, inking Ferrell won't be cost-prohibitive, so he could turn out to be a solid low-key addition to the defense.
