1. Jaguars veteran who could lose his job to a rookie: Tre Herndon: CB

Even though cornerback was among the Jaguars' biggest needs in the offseason they waited until the sixth round of the draft to address it when they took Christian Braswell 202nd overall. Then again, it's easy to see what general manager Trent Baalke prioritized making upgrades to other position groups.

See, Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams are set to start in the boundaries. What the Jags need is a third cornerback that can line up in the slot and they brought back Tre Herndon on a one-year deal to fill that role. The thing is that Herndon has ample experience at the position and his ability to play inside and outside makes him a valuable depth piece. However, he gave up a 68.9 completion rate when targeted and allowed 13.5 yards per reception. Simply, the Jags need better production from the nickel position. Enter Braswell.

Sophomores Gregory Junior and Monatic Brown are expected to make strides in 2023 but it could be Braswell the one that challenges Herndon for the nickel job. Although it's too early to tell how things will play out, Braswell has gotten reps at nickel and if he grows comfortable throughout the summer, the Jags might give him a chance to prove what he's got.

Of course, Braswell faces an uphill battle to unseat Herndon. He's got the speed and the short-area quickness to thrive inside but he will need to find ways to overcome his lack of length and show better discipline in coverage. Either way, the former Rutgers Scarlet Knight should feel good about his chances ahead of the 2023 season.
