No. 2 player who's skyrocketing on the Jaguars depth chart, D'Ernest Johnson, RB

Running back Tank Bigsby once again made a strong case to be the No. 2 behind starter Travis Etienne in 2023. However, Bigsby wasn't the only back that stood out against Detroit. D'Ernest Johnson, who signed a one-year deal in free agency, also made the most of his chances the last two weeks.

Against the Cowboys, Johnson toted the rock five times for 31 yards. He followed that up with six carries for 36 yards with two touchdowns in Week 2. Besides showing the ability to churn out tough yards, he managed to reel a one-handed grab near the Lions' end zone in the third quarter. He would reach the end zone on the following play.

Meanwhile, JaMycal Hasty, the primary backup at running back last year, had four rushes for eight yards against the Lions. Similarly, sophomore Snoop Conner racked up 18 yards on five carries, not much to write home about.

Even though the Jaguars could save a bit over $1 million if they chose to release Johnson before the start of the 2023 season, he's done enough in the preseason to earn a roster spot. The fact that he can contribute on special teams should also help his case.

The bottom line is that even if Johnson is below Hasty on the depth chart, he's versatile enough to make you think he'll find his way onto the football field in 2023, one way or the other.
