No. 2 Jaguars player the Lions could trade for to replace CJ Gardner-Johnson: Andrew Wingard

Trade Gardner Johnson No. 3

If the Lions are looking for more than depth and want to ensure they have a solid option to replace CJ Gardner-Johnson, regardless of how much time he potentially misses, they could then give the Jaguars a call about Andrew Wingard.

An undrafted free agent in 2019, Wingard worked his way up the depth chart and has appeared in 64 games with 24 starts (15 of them in 2021) over the last four seasons. Even though he had a reserve role last year, he contributed on special teams and become a locker-room leader for the Jags.

While Gardner-Johnson is the better player, Wingard is a dependable stater, one that could considerably lessen the impact of Gardner-Johnson's absence. The fact that Dewey has a cap-friendly contract makes him an appealing option to inquire about.

Having said that, the Jaguars might not feel inclined to part ways with their No. 3 safety in the depth chart. Trading him could prove to be an unpopular move among players given the impact of his leadership and the effort the team has made to keep their own players from leaving. Then again, they should listen in case Lions general manager Brad Holmes got in touch with them.
