CB Tre Flowers could be cut before he plays a snap for the Jaguars

The Jaguars got flak for not addressing the cornerback position in the first two rounds of the draft and waiting until the third to nab Jarrian Jones. Based on the flashes he had in Organized Team Activities, maybe it wasn't a bad idea. On the other hand, the front office was conscious that they needed to add depth at the position even after drafting Jones, so they signed Tre Flowers.

This move makes sense when you consider that Flowers played for Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen when he held the same position for the Atlanta Falcons. A fifth-round pick by the Seahawks in 2018, he was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021 midseason and joined the Falcons last year.

For his career, the Oklahoma State product has appeared in 90 games with 44 starts (30 came in his first two seasons), registering five passes defensed, and four interceptions. His one-year contract is worth a manageable $1.25 million, so he could turn out to be a low-key solid acquisition. Having said that, Flowers may have an uphill battle to make the roster.

Tyson Campbell and Ronald Darby will tentatively be the starters come Week 1. Jones could eventually supplant Darby in the lineup but there's a chance he'll be the primary backup to begin the season.

The Jaguars also have Montaric Brown, Gregory Junior, and Chris Braswell in the fold. Of the bunch, Braswell may have the biggest upside. On the other hand, Brown and Junior have steadily improved since they were drafted in 2022.

Flowers will need to prove that he deserves a roster spot over maybe Brown and Junior. He'll get a chance in training camp. But for the time being, he could be outside looking in.
