3 important questions for the Jaguars wide receiver corps entering training camp
The Jacksonville Jaguars are poised to have one of the best offenses in the NFL next season. Trevor Lawrence should keep getting better in his second season in Doug Pederson's system. Also, tight end Evan Engram, who set several team records last year, is back for at least one more season after getting the franchise tag.
Christian Kirk and Zay Jones are also back after posting career numbers and they'll be joined by Calvin Ridley, who is ready to pick up where he left off before he retired in 2021. In fact, heading into the 2023 season, the Jags seem to have one of the best receiver corps in the league but to be truly considered an elite unit, they'll need to answer these three questions in the upcoming weeks.
No. 3 Will Calvin Ridley be a difference-maker for the Jaguars?
Calvin Ridley was one of the top receivers in the NFL early in his NFL career. A second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, he caught 217 receptions for 3,061 yards with 26 touchdowns in his first three seasons. However, injuries and mental health affected his performance in 2021. This made him hang up the cleats once the season had already begun.
During his retirement, he bet on football games and was suspended, as even when they're not active, players must abide by the league policy. Despite the fact that he was serving the suspension, the Jags swooped in and traded for him last year. He was reinstated in March and has partaken in team activities since then.
While some analysts believe Ridley can be a bonafide No. 1 receiver for the Jaguars in 2023, others wonder whether he can be the receiver he was early in his tenure with the Falcons. Similarly, questions about his preparedness for the regular season after being away for more than a year have surfaced.
So far, Ridley has shown he's in great shape and ready to return to greatness. Then again, he won't be able to put questions about his potential impact to rest until games are played.
