The Jacksonville Jaguars have gotten lots of attention in the offseason but these three talking points feel like overreactions.

1. Do the Jaguars have an elite quarterback in Trevor Lawrence?

This is an interesting one, what exactly constitutes elite? There's no doubt Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL and probably of this generation, but who's next? Joe Burrow has turned the Cincinnati Bengals into a perennial contender and Jalen Hurts had a huge role in helping the Philadelphia Eagles reach the Super Bowl last year but neither one is in the same echelon as Mahomes.

But let's say Hurts and Burrow are one tier below Mahomes, who else would you include in the same stratum? Dak Prescott? Justin Herbert? How about Aaron Rodgers or Josh Allen? The list gets a bit blurry and it's fair to wonder how big or small that tier it should be. That brings us to Lawrence. The former Clemson Tiger will often show up in the top 10 of most quarterback rankings, sometimes at No. 4, he'll also get the seventh place.

Lawrence made a huge leap in his rookie campaign and is expected to keep getting better. He and the Jaguars also beat Herbert twice last year while Rodgers hasn't worked hard enough in recent years to remain at the top of the quarterback hierarchy. Similarly, Josh Allen is coming off a mistake-laden season. But is that enough to justify calling Lawrence a top 5 passer in the league?

There's no doubt he needs to pick up where he left off last season but the fact he's part of the conversation is an encouraging sign. When was the last time a Jaguars quarterback was discussed as one of the best in the league?

The truth is that it might not matter whether Lawrence is the fourth or seventh-best signal-caller in the league. What matters is that he's in a position to help the Jaguars win games in 2023 and if they do, it will be hard not to talk about him as one of the top passers in the league.
