The Jacksonville Jaguars could suddenly find themselves with a logjam at safety. Antonio Johnson is coming off a banner season, while Eric Murray held his own in his first year in Duval. On top of that, the Jags used a third-round pick on Jalen Huskey in the 2026 draft, but if that wasn't enough, they'll get sophomore Caleb Ransaw back after sitting out his rookie campaign.

Ransaw was making noise in training camp last year. He was part of a three-way battle with Johnson and Andrew Wingard for the starting job and had a favorable chance to seize it. However, it all came to a screeching halt when he suffered a leg injury that ended his rookie season before it started. The Green Wave Tulene spent the remainder of 2025 recovering and is back at 100 percent. Head coach Liam Coen is hyped up about his return.

The Jaguars are hyped up to have Caleb Ransaw back in the mix

Liam Coen had an exchange with the local media after Day 1 of Organized Team Activities. He said that having Caleb Ransaw in the fold is huge, pointing out that the sophomore safety will be able to put to use all the theory he learned as a rookie.

"Huge to not obviously have a lot of the experience that he was able to get last year, having a quote-unquote red shirt, if you will. So he was in his playbook, he was watching tape and doing all those things, Coen told reporters (7:24 mark). "But it's so hard to take a step and really feel comfortable without doing it. This time is huge for Caleb to actually go through those motions, to make those calls, to see the defense work from his vantage point and how things work together. So, I think it's huge for Caleb."

Following Ransaw's season-ending injury, Coen stated that he would know how to attack rehab since he also dealt with injuries back in college. Former Tulane head coach John Sumrall shared a similar story about Ransaw, pointing out that he would be studying other safeties on his iPad at night while he recovered from an infection.

What should the Jaguars expect from Caleb Ransaw in Year 2

Caleb Ransaw played corner for the Green Wave, but the Jaguars moved him to safety because of his superb tackling skills. He seemingly had no trouble with the transition, and he may have won a starting job if he hadn't gotten hurt.

Since Antonio Johnson played at an absurdly high level in 2025, Ransaw will probably challenge Eric Murray for the other starting job. While Murray will have the edge by virtue of being the incumbent, Ransaw has bigger upside. That said, he will also need to look over his shoulder as rookie Jalen Huskey will be lurking behind.

Either way, the Jaguars expect big things from Caleb Ransaw in Year 2, and nobody will bat an eye if he turns into a mainstay of the back end.
