The Jacksonville Jaguars were officially eliminated from playoff contention when the Denver Broncos beat the Cleveland Browns in Week 13's Monday Night Football. However, it was a formality at that point since they had lost to the Houston Texans and dropped to 2-10 one day earlier.
Without much to play for the remainder of the season, it's probably a matter of time before the Jags dismiss head coach Doug Pederson, and when they start the search for their replacement, a trusted NFL voice says they must avoid a retread.
The B&T had a sitdown with Aaron Schatz of FTN Fantasy to talk about a handful of topics surrounding the Jaguars. One of them was their potential options to replace Pederson. While he didn't mention any specific names, Schatz said they should avoid candidates looking for a second chance.
"A retread," Schatz told the B&T. "Don't hire someone who failed the first time. I think they need to overturn the whole organization. I think [Baalke]'s got to go to. If they're going to overturn things, they need to overturn things."
In the upcoming cycle, Bill Belichick, Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury, and Mike Vrabel will be the biggest "retreads." Most of them had their former teams winning at some point but failed to enjoy sustained success at the end of their respective stints.
Not all retreads are the same though, and they all got dismissed for different reasons. For instance, Belichick was also in charge of personnel decisions and failed to adequately replenish the roster. Flores didn't have a great relationship with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and the same is true for Klingsbury and Kyler Murray. On top of that, he failed to turn the Arizona Cardinals into the offensive powerhouse they had envisioned.
In Vrabel's case, misunderstandings, and poor communication with the Tennessee Titans organization played a role in his firing after the 2023 season.
For the sake of the argument, let's say the Jaguars pass on the aforementioned options. Who should they then set their sight on? Ben Johnson will be the crown jewel, but there will be other intriguing alternatives.
Wes Philips has had success as the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. The same is true for Johnson's coworker and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Jacksonville could also inquire about someone who's been a trendy candidate in the past cycles but has yet to get a chance.
The point is that the Jaguars will have no shortage of options when looking for potential replacements for Doug Pederson.
Why the Jacksonville Jaguars should avoid retreads to replace Doug Pederson
Going back to Aaron Schatz's comments, he's right retreads hardly ever succeed. Heck, Doug Pederson won the Super Bowl with the Philadephia Eagles but eventually walked over disagreements with owner Jeffrey Lurie on his coaching staff.
Once he joined the Jags in 2022, Pederson had early success, leading his team to the playoffs and an AFC South title in his first year at the help. That said, Jacksonville has progressively faded, having won just three games dating back to Week 13 of the 2023 season. Most head coaches who get a second chance also fail, and that's mostly because they keep making the same mistakes that doomed their first tenure.
Having said that, the Jaguars must conduct a proper search and leave no stone unturned. Whether they set their sights on a former head coach with past success or a rising young coordinator, they must make sure they get the right man to steer the ship in the right direction.
