One of the reasons the Jacksonville Jaguars brougth in Liam Coen as their head coach was to help Trevor Lawrence take his game to the next level. At the time of the hire, the former Clemson Tiger was coming off an injury-marred season. On top of that, he had regressed under Doug Pederson. Having gotten the most out of Baker Mayfield the year prior, Coen seemed like the perfect choice to coach Lawrence. It was.

Although Lawrence was somewhat inconsistent at the beginning of the regular season, he showed notable improvement once he hit his stride. Based on the success he enjoyed, Coen expects him to master his offense.

Liam Coen is looking forward to expanding his playbook in 2026

Liam Coen had an exchange with Brent Martineau of ActionSportsJax and said that he'll unload his playbook in 2026, noting that he wants to see what kind of wrinkles he can add to the offense.

"I think maybe just like, look, you throw the whole playbook at somebody within the offseason and training camp, and once you're in season, well, some things are game plan specific, and some things are something we need to get done and need to rep," Coen told Martineau. "Well, it's going to be more about unloading the rest of the playbook on him. And then, hey, 'How much can we continue to add?" What layers can we continue to add to the offense? And excited about doing that with Trevor. "

Lawrence finished the year with a 60.9 completion rate for 4,007 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also had nine rushing touchdowns.

During the regular season, Adibti Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports noted that Coen's scheme was more detailed and complex than any other Lawrence had been in. With a better grasp of it, it's fair to assume that he'll be even better. Similarly, it will allow the Jaguars' head coach to add plays that take advantage of his quarterback's strengths.

The Jaguars should expect Trevor Lawrence to keep improving in 2026

After a strong finish to 2025, the playoff loss notwithstanding, Trevor Lawrence should have no trouble picking up where he left off. Nearly every offensive lineman from last year will return next season. Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers will be part of the offseason program after landing in Jacksonville midseason, so he'll be able to work on his already strong connection with No. 16.

On top of that, Lawrence spent the offseason recovering from shoulder surgery, and he wasn't truly at full strength until training camp. He's fully healthy now, so he can fully focus on mastering Liam Coen's playbook.

After a successful 2025, the Jaguars will face several roadblocks to return to the playoffs next season. The biggest one will be to replenish a roster with several needs, but if Trevor Lawrence keeps playing the way he did last year, they'll have a good chance of pulling it off.
