The Jacksonville Jaguars introduced Liam Coen as their new head coach a few days after hiring him. Throughout the press conference, he talked about his vision and his goals at the helm. Unfortunately, he got the spotlight for a whole different reason.
It's become somewhat of a tradition for new coaches to lead the team's emblematic Duval chant when they get hired. Coen gave it a shot, and it probably didn't go the way he or anyone expected.
Wait, what? For comparsion, here's Tony Boselli leading the Duuuval chant.
Here's another one by former Jags cornerback Shaq Griffin at training camp.
As you can see, both chants have lots of energy. Meanwhile, Coen appears to be singing it. In his defense, he gave it another try during an exchange with Jamal St. Cyr of News4Jax and it came out much better. It starts at the 4:12 mark.
Liam Coen's Duval chant overshadow his introduction as the Jaguars head coach
You have probably heard that head coaches win or lose their introductory press conference. In Coen's case, it didn't get great reviews for a handful of reasons beyond his Duval chant. For starters, he didn't seem upfront when he was asked about the circumstances that led to his departure from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When asked about it, he simply stated that the Jags presented a great opportunity.
Similarly, someone asked Coen twice if Trent Baalke getting the boot made him reconsider the Jaguars job. He said it didn't. Then again, what was he supposed to say? "Yes, Jacksonville offered me more money, and a head-coaching gig." Or, "I obviously resumed talks because I despised Trent Baalke."
Even though Baalke's ousting most likely played a factor in Coen's decision to become the Jaguars head coach, he isn't openly going to talk about it. In the same manner, his exit from Tampa Bay may have had bad optics, but his wife Ashley provided additional details and context about the whole ordeal. Moreover, the ones who are complaining the most are Buccaneers fans who aren't thrilled that they lost their offensive coordinator.
Now, this isn't a defense of Coen. If you didn't like his Duval chant or how he responded to some of the questions, you aren't probably alone. Having said that, he also had several bright spots during his introductory press conference.
Lost in the moment was his plan to use Trevor Lawrence and his praise of other offensive players. Similarly, he made sure to highlight Heath Farwell's work as the special teams coach. Another moment that hit hard was before the press conference when he said his dad would be pretty excited if he saw how far he's gone.
As a whole, Liam Coen's introduction might've not gone great, but the truth is that it's too early to think he will flame out. Now, if the losses start to pile up, you shouldn't hesitate to give him flak for it. But for the time being, it's hard to come up with any meaningful conclusions just because his Duval chant wasn't the best.
