When Dexter Lawrence requested a trade, the Jacksonville Jaguars quickly emerged as an obvious landing spot, and understandably so. He's been one of the most defensive tackles in the NFL since the New York Giants made him a first-round pick. Furthermore, the former Clemson Tiger would fill a huge roster void. On the other hand, he's looking for a new deal, and that could make the Jags and other potential suitors steer clear.

When asked about it, general manager James Gladstone stated that Jacksonville hasn't looked into a potential pursuit of Lawrence. This led to the trade chatter dying down. However, an abrupt twist could incentivize Jacksonville to change its stance on the eight-year veteran.

The Jaguars and other NFL teams are watching the Dexter Lawrence impasse unfold

Just a few days ago, Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters that the team and Dexter Lawrence were having positive conversations, noting that they had been in communication and were looking for a positive resolution. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that negotiations have stalled, adding that Big Blue is now entertaining trade talks for the three-time Pro Bowl nod. But wait, there's more!

Pat Leonard of NY Daily News Sports reports that the situation is more dire than just an impasse, pointing out that contract talks have broken off, and Lawrence has generated significant trade interest.

Earlier this year, Giants head coach John Harbaugh said that they would like to keep Lawrence but didn't truly rule out a potential trade. However, the G-Men may not get a huge offer for him. For starters, he hasn't recorded a sack in 22 games, dating back to 2024. The fact that he wants to get a substantial pay bump could also be a turn-off.

Nevertheless, the Jaguars should reach out to New York and see what it would take to get a deal done.

The pros and cons of the Jaguars trading for Dexter Larwence

Before this recent stretch, Dexter Lawrence was a force to be reckoned with. Heck, he even had a career-best nine sacks in 2024. However, his dearth of production and his contract demands are a reason for concern. Think about it, if he's not pleased with his current contract, what could change if the Jags trade for him and don't give him a new deal?

Moreover, Lawrence is not allegedly asking for a slight raise but rather an increase of $10 million. Jacksonville may not be willing to give up draft compensation and give him $30 million. On the other hand, perhaps he'll benefit from a chance of scenery.

Lawrence could bounce back with another team, and maybe the Jags could convince him that unless he shows he's back to his dominant self, they won't grant his contract demands. Ultimately, though, it all could come down to what the Giants want in return for him.

Trading a first-rounder is out of the question. For starters, the Jags don't have their 2026 first-round pick after moving up for Travis Hunter last year, and they probably won't give up their first in 2027. If New York wants a second, it would then make sense.

Of course, the Jaguars may be better off drafting a young defensive tackle. In fact, jumping up into the first round to land Kayden McDonald may be better than trading for Dexter Lawrence, but the latter scenario can't be outright discarded if it can address the larger scale roster.
