The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it clear that they want to put Trevor Lawrence in a position to succeed next season. They proved it in free agency by beefing up the offensive line. However, they could still make further upgrades to their quarterback's supporting cast in the 2025 NFL Draft. Based on a scoop from a local reporter, it looks like they might do just that.
Mia O'Brien of 1010 made an appearance on Duval Rundown and said that the Jags must bolster their wide receiver corps, noting that they're zeroing in on two prospects at No. 36.
"The wide receiver position, for me, is one that the Jaguars, I think, even more than defensive tackle, because they did not pick anyone up in free agency," O'Brien told colleague Hans Carlyon when pointing out that she had promised that she had a scoop. "The wide receiver position is the one that they've backed themselves into a corner, and they realize they need to hit on someone opposite Brian Thomas, Jr. because Dyami Brown is only on a one-year deal."
O'Brien continued, "Because his strength is on the outside as a burner, and you still need someone because you don't know what Gabe Davis is at this point that will compliment BTJ. And while Parker Washington is a more than capable slot receiver, he is a slot receiver in the old mold of an undersized, thick guy. That is not what the Sean McVay tree wide receiver looks like, as much as I believe in Parker, because I've had multiple conversations with him about him flexing outside."
"I know that this is a front office that is looking for a certain type of player."The good news is that there are several of them. One of them may have made an appearance and Mia's mock draft, 1.0 in TCU's Jack Bech the other may not be making an appearance next week, because I got some intel that the Jaguars, there's certain Ohio State receiver that if he was there at 36 James Gladstone, would literally moonwalk and do the worm to get to the podium."
The only Ohio State wide receiver who's expected to go late in the first or early in the second round this year is Emeka Egbuka. Although he's previously been mocked to the Jags, there hadn't been reports linking them to him or Jack Bech until O'Brien shared her scoop.
Egbuka is a great route-runner without a great catch radius and top speed. That said, he excels at moving the chains and running underneath routes. In Jacksonville, he could become Lawrence's safety valve.
Like Egbuka, Bech is expected to go in the second round. His biggest red flags are probably that he was a late bloomer at TCU and lacks top-end speed like his Ohio State counterpart. That said, he routes superb routes and plays with a physical style coaches love.
It's also worth noting that Egbuka and Bech mostly lined up in the slot at the collegiate level, but both are taller than Parker Washington, who's 5'10", so they could also play in the boundaries. Below is the full exchange between O'Brien and Carlyon. Her remarks about the Jaguars' targets in Round 2 start at the 8:49 mark.
Jack Bech or Emeka Egbuka would round out the Jaguars wide receiver corps
Parker Washington proved in 2024 that he could take on a heavy workload when he filled in for Christian Kirk. However, his lack of height may limit him to the slot. That's where drafting someone like Jack Bech or Emeka Egbuka would come in handy. Standing at 6'1", both of them could line up anywhere across the line of scrimmage and offer the Jacksonville Jaguars a bit of flexibility.
Moreover, drafting either Bech at Egbuka at No. 36 would allow the front office to beef up the offensive or defensive lines. And that's the thing, the Jags will have plenty of options in the first round, but they may not get plenty of value if they draft Tetairoa McMillan, the top receiver of the class, at No. 5.
Sure, there's a dropoff from McMillan to Bech and Egbuka, but it's not that steep. Furthermore, Jacksonville has bigger needs than receiver, so it can wait until Round 2 to address it.
The truth is that it's refreshing to hear that the Jaguars want to keep adding weapons to Trevor Lawrence's arsenal. And doing it in Round 2, whether they go after Jack Bech or Emeka Egbuka, would allow them to make upgrades to other positions in a bigger need.
