The Jacksonville Jaguars took care of a pressing issue when they signed Travon Walker to a four-year, $110 million extension with $55 million guaranteed. Instead of waiting until next year to decide what to do with one of ther defensive cornerstones, they went ahead and ensured he'll continue to wreak havoc opposite Josh Hines-Allen for the foreseeable future.
By extending Walker, the Jags are preventing opposing teams from doubling Hines-Allen. This, in turn, should allow their defensive front to remain effective. Granted, the team's brass still needs to bolster the interior defensive line and bring in a No. 3 to round out their pass-rush rotation.
Circling back to Walker, the Jags made the right call. He's coming off an injury-marred season, but he no longer has to worry about the uncertainty that comes with entering a contract year. The former Georgia Bulldog can now focus on being the best player he can be. And understandably, Hines-Allen is hyped up about his teammate.
Josh Hines-Allen is hyped up the Jaguars extended Travon Walker
Not long after the news that Travon Walker got an extension, Josh Hines-Allen took to Twitter to congratulate his teammate, pointing out that "he deserved every penny."
@44Ytw you deserve every penny!!!

Hines-Allen signed a five-year deal worth $141.25 million in 2024 following a career season. Watching his teammate get paid surely gets him hyped up, knowing the duo will continue to terrorize opposing offensive lines for years to come.
For her part, Mina Kimes of ESPN argues that Travon Walker isn't a superstar in the mold of Aidan Hutchinson but points out that he's become a valuable contributor for the Jaguars.
"You know, Trevon Walker has been a good player, Kimes said in response to Walker's extension. "I think he suffers a little bit from being that first overall pick before Aiden Hutchinson, who obviously has become a superstar. But if you take that out of the equation and just look at Walker's career, he's been tremendous against the run. Only had four sacks, I believe, last season, before that, had double digits the prior two seasons, and he's been an excellent Robin to Josh Hines-Allen's Batman."
Kimes continued, "So I think the Jags getting this done for a young player makes sense. Contract will age well, and now I think they should focus on adding some pass rush juice on the interior between those pass rushers, because they really haven't gotten up in that particular area of their defensive line over the last couple of years."
For context, the Detroit Lions took Hutchinson just one pick later after the Jaguars drafted Travon Walker first overall in 2022. Since then, Hutchinson has gone on to become one of the most dominant pass rushers in the NFL. Meanwhile, Walker has been a fine starter but not the game-altering kind of talent.
Nevertheless, No. 44 has become a fixture of the Jacksonville defense, which is why the Jags chose to act now.
The Jaguars need to next bolster the D-Line after extending Travon Walker
As Mina Kimes pointed out, the Jaguars still need to add reinforcements at defensive tackle. You can even make the case that it's their biggest need. While Arik Armstead is a fine player, he's entering a contract year. He's been dubbed a cut candidate, but it looks like Jacksonville wants to hold onto him. But even if Armstead sticks around, they need to bring in a game-changer. 2024 second-round pick Maason Smith has left much to be desired, and DaVon Hamilton excels at stuffing the run but isn't much of a pass rusher.
The good news is that the Jaguars can look for help at defensive tackle in the draft. They could target Christen Miller at No. 56, or perhaps Darrell Jackson Jr. or Chris McClellan in Round 3.
Either way, the Jaguars have their work cut out for them. Once they finish celebrating the Travon Walker extension, they'll need to focus on addressing the interior defensive front.
