Jakobi Meyers pops up on initial Jaguars injury report but has exciting update

After a fruitful offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars are gearing up to face the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 of the preseason. They'll have a prime opportunity to end a losing skid against quarterback Deshaun Watson, but they may have to do it without some key contributors on offense.

Liam Coen announced during an exchange with the local media that right tackle Cole Van Lanen and running back LeQuint Allen Jr. will be game-time decisions. This is why it wasn't necessarily surprising to see both of them pop up on the initial injury report for Week 1.

But aside from Van Lanen and Allen, Jakobi Meyers also popped up on the initial injury report. That said, he has an intriguing update for the season opener.

The Jaguars dropped their first injury report for the Browns game. Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, running back LeQuint Allen Jr., and offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen earned the limited designation.

Despite his appearance on the injury report, though, Meyers says that he'll play against the Browns, via John Shipley of Sports Illustrated.

Before the Jags posted their injury report, Mia O'Brien of Action News Jax reported that every Jags player on the 53-man roster participated in practice, adding that Allen wasn't wearing pads, while Meyers was wearing pads and a non-contact jersey. Van Lanen, for his part, was working out with the rest of the offensive line, taking a big step toward returning to the field after suffering a knee injury late in 2025.

On the other hand, Meyers and Allen sustained injuries in training camp. The former already said that he'll suit up, so it will be worth keeping an eye on the latter.

What the Jaguars can do if Cole Van Lanen, Meyers and Allen aren't good to go

If Cole Van Lanen isn't ready to go in Week 1, Walker Little will most likely get the start at right tackle. On the other hand, rookie CJ Williams is behind Jakobi Meyers on the depth chart, so he could be part of the offensive game plan on the off chance Meyers doesn't play. And if LeQuint Allen has to sit out the game, veteran Ameer Abdullah will handle pass protection duty and will serve as a target out of the backfield.

Simply put, the Jaguars would most definitely miss Van Lanen, Allen, and Meyers if they don't suit up, but the team can withstand their absence in the short term because it has enough depth at their respective positions.

Keep in mind that the Jags have a somewhat favorable matchup against the Browns and are favored to win. That could factor into the game-time decision to let Van Lanen and/or Allen play in Week 1.

After all, the last thing the Jaguars want is to lose key contributors at such an early stage of the regular season. But if any of them are good to go, they could definitely help make the game more manageable.
