The Jacksonville Jaguars had a surprisingly good season in 2025, winning 13 games and the AFC South before a tough loss to Buffalo on Wild Card Weekend.
One of the most shocking things about the Jaguars’ season was that they did all of that while one of their most promising players, Brian Thomas Jr., had a struggle-filled year. The second-year receiver regressed after a breakout rookie season, and his year-two performance left some people concerned.
ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz has taken that concern to another level. In a recent piece, naming one player on all 32 teams who needs a change of scenery, Schatz argued that Jacksonville should consider trading Thomas this offseason.
ESPN analyst says Jaguars should consider trading wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.
Schatz detailed Thomas’ drop off from his sensational rookie season to his underwhelming follow up, before ultimately making a case that Jacksonville has enough weapons to trade the wideout and pick up some high draft picks.
"This idea would have seemed ridiculous a year ago after Thomas put up 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns…But Thomas seemed to be on a completely different page from quarterback Trevor Lawrence last season... Thomas' production fell to 48 catches for 707 yards and two scores. The Jaguars have Travis Hunter coming back. They signed Jakobi Meyers to an extension. And Parker Washington had a breakout second half of the 2025 season. There's room here to trade Thomas, and his talent could fetch a high draft pick... It's certainly something worth considering."Aaron Schatz (ESPN)
Once upon a time, this was simply called a sophomore slump, and everyone offered the young player grace, while anticipating a bounce-back season in Year 3. While the NFL may not be as patient of a league as it once was, this is absolutely what the Jaguars should do in regards to Thomas.
The young wide receiver has already shown that he can be a special wideout in the league. Yes, there have been growing pains, but that’s part of being a young player adjusting to the top level. Even in the underwhelming season, Thomas still had moments that made fans exhale and remember he’s an extremely talented receiver.
So no, the Jaguars do not need to trade Brian Thomas Jr. this offseason. While it’s great that the team has multiple productive receivers in the unit, Thomas should absolutely remain a part of the group.
