Jaguars selection of Albert Regis threatens to push out longtime journeyman

It looks like we got another addition to a defensive tackle group that seems to be getting a face lift.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have addressed one of their most pressing needs by choosing Albert Regis with the 81st-overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Regis, the second Texas A&M Aggie selected by the Jaguars in as many picks, is a short but dynamic run stopper who fits perfectly on a defense that ranked first against the run in the NFL last year. A scouting report published by the NFL claims that the 295-pounder was graded to go in the fourth round, but the run of big names at the start of the second round forced the Jags to begin considering what they needed instead of who was the true best player available.

With defensive tackle checked off the list, the Jags could opt to go elsewhere with their other picks tonight. However, there is a journeyman on the roster who should think about what Regis' arrival in Duval County could mean for him.

Matt Dickerson could be on the way out the door after the Jaguars' latest pick

Matt Dickerson is a 30-year-old vet who's been in the league for seven seasons. Of those seven years, only one of them (2025) was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He signed a one-year contract to return to Jacksonville back in February, but there's a chance he won't be on the roster come Week 1.

Dickerson was a bit underwhelming while serving as a backup defensive lineman last year, as he only racked up 10 combined tackles, two quarterback hits, and one tackle for loss. As much as it sucks to say, Regis should eclipse that fairly easily if he's given the opportunities to do so.

Dickerson can play inside or outside, while Regis is more of an undersized nose tackle. While the roles are different, roster spots in the NFL are finite. Dickerson could still beat someone else out to make the team after training camp, but it's looking pretty unlikely after tonight.

Regis doesn't fix the Jaguars' lack of an interior pass rush, but there are still opportunities to find some explosive athletes to help in that area. If a miracle happens and Dickerson shows the coaching staff something interesting, the battle between he and Regis could be more interesting than it looks on paper at the moment.
