With cutdown day inching closer, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be making changes to the roster. Just two days after the loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 2, they released cornerback Devon Marshall and bolstered the depth on the defensive line.

The Jags announced that they waived Marshall and signed defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote in a corresponding move.

Early in the offseason, Marshall seemed to have a chance to earn a roster spot. However, Jacksonville may have already seen enough of him to decide that he wasn't part of the team's plans in 2026. On the other hand, Akingbesote will have a chance to showcase his talent in the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Why the Jaguars waived Devon Marshall

The Jaguars are stacked at cornerback. Travis Hunter and Montaric Brown will tentatively play in the boundaries. Jarrian Jones and Jourdan Lewis could also play in the perimeter but could mostly get snaps at nickel. That potentially leaves one roster spot up for grabs. Jabbar Muhammad and Christian Braswell are competing for it. However, it's not clear whether one of them is in the driver's seat.

Muhammad had a strong training camp but has been inconsistent in the preseason. Braswell has also struggled to stand out. Having said that, one of them will get the nod, as no other cornerback on the Jacksonville roster was able to stand out.

Marshall signed with the Jags after going undrafted. He flashed in the offseason program but failed to shine in training camp. The former North Carolina State Wolfpack didn't do much of note on 42 defensive snaps, giving up three receptions on four targets. On top of that, he didn't make any big plays.

The Jaguars may not keep Tommy Akindale for long

Devon Marshall will have a chance to latch onto another team, but Tommy Akingbesote doesn't necessarily have a favorable chance to stick around in Duval next season.

A seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2025, Akingbesote spent time with the Carolina Panthers and the Buffalo Bills last year. He remained with the Bills a good chunk of the offseason before being given the boot.

The Jags have pretty much sorted out their defensive tackle unit. Arik Armstead, DaVon Hamilton, Ruke Orhorhoro, Albert Regis, and Matt Dickerson are locks to make the team. That means that Akingbesote's best chance to stay in Jacksonville will be on the practice squad, and even then, he could have an uphill battle.

The truth is that the Jaguars are going to look for ways to address the larger scale roster before the regular season. It doesn't hurt to see if they can improve the depth at defensive tackle, but Tommy Akingsbeoste may have trouble cracking the team.
