The Jacksonville Jaguars appear to be headed in the right direction under the leadership of Liam Coen and James Gladstone. That said, they're coming off a pair of disappointing seasons and will need to win a few games early in 2025 to build good grace.
Not surprisingly, the Jags will not fare well in most NFL power rankings. As a matter of fact, there's one where they earned a low but fair spot.
The Jaguars earn a low spot in NFL rankings to start the 2025 season
Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone put together a power ranking and placed the Jags at No. 23, pointing out that they have enough talent and a highly respected head coach in Liam Coen to compete for the AFC South title in 2025. Here's the skinny.
"Don't sleep on the Jacksonville Jaguars this coming season," Bedinger wrote. "The Jaguars have a new GM (James Gladstone), a new head coach (Liam Coen), and one of the most fascinating prospects in recent memory (Travis Hunter). If the Jags get a healthy Trevor Lawrence, why can't this team compete in the AFC South? That was one of the worst divisions in football last year, and Lawrence has proven he can be a major difference-maker when healthy."
Bedinger continued, "Nobody should be counting out the Jaguars, who could sneak up on the Texans in the AFC South this season."
All things considered, this is a fair assessment of the Jaguars, who missed the playoffs the past two years and went 4-13 in 2024.
It's also worth noting that Bedinger placed Jacksonville ahead of teams such as the New England Patriots (No. 24), and division foes Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts (Nos. 31 and 29, respectively).

The Jaguars had a fair spot in the NFL power rankings
You can bring up their underwhelming record the past two years as the reason the Jaguars won't make noise in 2025. Heck, they're projected to win 7.5 games, which is an improvement, but not a significant one. That said, they made enough changes to make you think that they can legitimately compete for a playoff spot and challenge the Houston Texans next season.
For starters, Liam Coen is a highly regarded offensive mind across the NFL. He's helped Trevor Lawrence fix his mechanics, and his coaching will put him in a position to once again play like a top-10 quarterback.
Speaking of Lawrence, he's the healthiest he's been in years and has what's arguably the best supporting cast of his career. Behind a beefed-up offensive line, and Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr. as his receivers, No. 16 is in a prime position to bounce back from a pair of injury-marred seasons.
On the other hand, general manager James Gladstone has done a superb job of replenishing the roster, adding depth and talent to nearly all position groups.
Of course, the Jaguars don't exist in a vacuum. Other teams have improved since the end of the 2024 season. But given that the Houston Texans have glaring flaws, while the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans also have plenty of questions of their own, Jacksonville is indeed in a position to turn heads next season.
Ultimately, though, the Jaguars will need to win games to stop being taken lightly. That said, they made enough changes throughout the offseason to make you think that they will. Along the way, they're going to see a surge in power rankings.
