The Jacksonville Jaguars have a few question marks across the roster, but their cornerback room is in good shape. Some of that stems from the fact that Travis Hunter will play defense full-time next season. It also helps that they re-signed Montaric Brown before free agency.
On the other hand, Jourdan Lewis and Jarrian Jones are better suited to line up in the slot but can play in the boundaries if needed. But even beyond the top of the depth chart, Jacksonville has quality depth at corner.
Jabbar Muhammad will challenge Christian Braswell for what could be the top roster spot, but undrafted rookies Preston Hodge and Devon Marshall will also have a chance to make the team. This is why it was a bit to see the team's brass add just another cornerback on the eve of training camp.
The Jaguars signed Corey Ballentine just before training camp
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Jaguars signed cornerback Corey Ballentine and placed Dane Jackson on the Retire/Reserve list. Around the same time, the team announced the moves around the same time.
Ballentine landed with the Dallas Cowboys last year and re-signed in 2026. However, he became the victim of the numbers game and was released in the offseason. The veteran cornerback was mostly a depth piece for Big D in 2025, logging 23 snaps on defense and 47 on special teams in five games.
A sixth-round pick by the New York Giants in 2019, Ballentine also spent time with the Detroit Lions, the Detriot Lions, and the New England Patriots. Clearly, he's been consistent enough to last seven seasons in the NFL.
Corey Ballentine will have trouble sticking around with the Jaguars
Dane Jackson was a long shot to make the initial 53-man roster, so placing him on the Retired list isn't a big blow. That said, the Jaguars needed to fill his spot. Hence, the Corey Ballentine signing.
The truth is that Ballentine's odds of making the team don't look particularly great. Four slots are earmarked for Jarrian Jones, Travis Hunter, Jourdan Lewis, and Montaric Brown. Jabbar Muhammad will compete for the fifth. Both of them could make the cut if Jacksonville keeps six cornerbacks. Preston Hodge or Devon Marshall could also compete for that sixth spot but will have an uphill battle. When you factor in that he's a career backup, he's currently on the outside looking in.
Based on how the roster looks, Corey Ballentine may turn out to be not much more than a camp body. That said, he'll get a fair shot to compete, so he shouldn't be outright dismissed, as bleak as his odds look.
