The Jacksonville Jaguars traded for Jakobi Meyers at the November 4 deadline because they needed help at receiver. They've been so pleased with his impact that they didn't hesitate to give him an extension less than two months after acquiring him.
The deal is worth $60 million with $40 million guaranteed, and it ensures that the Lithonia, Georgia native stays in Jacksonville through 2028. Liam Coen, in particular, is thrilled that the team was able to get it done.
Jakobi Meyers got a contract because he made an impact for the Jaguars early on
Liam Coen met with the local media ahead of the Week 16 matchup against the Denver Broncos. He said that he's happy for Jakobi Meyers, noting that the seventh-year receiver and Trevor Lawrence have already developed a strong rapport.
"Obvious connection between he and Trevor," Coen told reporters (0:48 mark). "Early on, you could feel that there was chemistry there, and guy that's prepared like a true pro since he's got here. And you know, anytime you can get guys like that, where you have a continued chemistry, and you feel like it continue it gets better each week, and really happy for the guy."
Later in the exchange, Coen said that he was impressed the first week Meyers joined the team, pointing out that you could tell he was a great fit right off the bat.
"Yeah, the first week was pretty impressive with how he operated in the walkthrough settings and in practice, and actually didn't end up winning that game, against Houston, but he was a part of that tough time, and also made some plays in that game, and you could kind of tell that it was, it was going to be a good fit, and it's continued to be," Coen said.
"And really, the most important thing is his teammates really like him. The offensive line loves him, and that's usually where you can kind of check the moral compass of the person."
Since arriving in Jacksonville, Meyers has hauled in 27 catches for 355 yards with three touchdowns. Moreover, he's given Lawrence a trusted target who can operate in the middle of the field. Here's a clip of the former North Carolina State Wolfpack signing his new contract.

Signing Jakobi Meyers now gives the Jaguars flexibility in the offseason
The Jaguars should feel great about their wide receiver corps going into 2026. Jakobi Meyers has been as reliable as he's been throughout his career, so don't expect that to change anytime soon. Brian Thomas Jr. has bounced back after a slow start to his sophomore campaign, while Travis Hunter will return from injury. Couple that with the fact that Parker Washington has a year remaining on his contract, and Jacksonville is set at the position.
By locking up Meyers now, the team's brass can address other needs in free agency and the draft. Sure, the Jags could add depth at receiver if Tim Jones leaves, but it won't be a top priority.
Having checked off a massive box, the Jaguars can turn their attention to finishing the season strong an making a playoff push.
