Following a disappointing end to 2024, Trevor Lawrence focused on his recovery from a shoulder injury. He also spent time honing his footwork and eye coordination. After the Jacksonville Jaguars took the field for the first time in training camp, head coach Liam Coen talked about those crucial elements of the fifth-year quarterback's game.

After Day 1 of Jaguars training camp, Coen met with the local media and said that Lawrence had a good day, pointing out that his mechanics and footwork were a point of emphasis.

"I thought he was pretty a lot of ways. You know, it's more so a we want to get our feet to our target, but that doesn't mean your eyes have to always be at your target, like we can use our eyes as a weapon while keeping our feet clean," Coen responded when asked how Lawrence's footwork looked (5;10 mark). "That's been something we've continued to work on going into this year in your development, your eyes have to be a weapon and your feet have to be in rhythm, right? Because we know once stuff starts moving, it's not going to always be perfect."

Coen continued, "So if we can continue to drill that, I thought he had a good day, like I said today, and he's taken to it, right? He was right foot up all last year, and really the course of his career, and now he's left foot up in the shotgun I'm talking about. So that kind of involves a little bit of a different rhythm footwork. And I thought, I think he's done a nice job progressing that so far."

Earlier this year, Coen had stated that he would work with Lawrence to improve his footwork. No. 16 said in the offseason that he had been working on his footwork and eye coordination. During a recent apperance on the O-Zone podcast, he said that he now lines up with his left foot forward instead of the right because of the scheme, noting that he's been switched back and forth throughout his football career.

Trevor Lawrence was a mix bag to start Jaguars training camp

Mia O'Brien of ESPN says that Trevor Lawrence was up and down on Day 1 of training camp. Unless that becomes a recurrent issue, it shouldn't be an issue for concern. This was the first day of practice, and he's still honing his footwork.

Having said that, Lawrence should have no excuse to perform to the best of his capabilities now that he's 100 percent back from the shoulder injury he suffered in 2024. Working in his favor is that he still has time to refine his mechanics before the Jaguars face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason opener.

Ideally, you would like Trevor Lawrence to hit his stride to start training camp, but this is the time of the year when he's got a bit of room for error. As long as he makes the most of his reps, he should be in a great position to begin the regular season.
