The Jacksonville Jaguars raised eyebrows when they signed Dyami Brown in free agency. Sure, they needed help at receiver, and he was an offensive mainstay of the Washington Commanders during their playoff run in 2024. However, giving a one-year deal to a player who hadn't done much in his first three NFL seasons seemed excessive. Fast forward to Organized Team Activities, and the Jags are already getting plenty of bang for their buck.
Brown has turned heads throughout OTAs. Head coach Liam Coen is pleased with his performance, pointing out that the fourth-year wideout has been everything the club bargained for and then some.
"He's been great, man. He's made a lot of plays," Coen responded when asked how Brown is doing so far. "He's been really productive throughout this whole camp so far, showing versatility to do maybe some things that you know, he hadn't put on tape, maybe in the past, or wasn't asked to do. From his skill set standpoint, I thought, obviously, he was very productive towards, you know, the halfway point of last year into the playoffs, and then you see that confidence continuing to go throughout this camp and this offseason."
Coen continued, "So he's been doing a nice job of being able to run vertically, but also, you know, being the nuance route runner and some of the daggers and in-cuts, and things like that. I thought he's been very locked in this entire time. I've been really impressed with the pro that he is."
Based on Coen's comments, Brown is building momentum, as he was a standout on Day 1 of OTAs. At this pace, it's not hard to envision him playing a big role and potentially starting opposite Brian Thomas Jr. when Jacksonville faces the Carolina Panthers in the season opener.
A third-round pick by the Commanders in 2021, Brown was unremarkable in his first three seasons, logging a measly 29 receptions for 476 yards with three touchdowns. But he turned the corner late in 2024 and ended up amassing a career-best 30 receptions for 308 yards with one touchdown. The Jaguars expect him to pick up where he left off last year.
Why the Jaguars should feel bullish about Dyami Brown in 2025
Players' readiness is always variable, and some need more time than others to put it all together. That appears to be the case with Dyami Brown, who should be incentivized to build off his strong finish to 2024. After all, he's set to be a free agent again next year, and the better he plays, the better the contract he'll be able to secure.
On the other hand, the Jacksonville Jaguars are getting a receiver who can get deep and draw coverage away from budding star Brian Thomas Jr. On top of that, having Brown will allow them to give Travis Hunter as much time as needed to get acclimated to the NFL. Sure, there's a strong chance that he'll be ready when Jacksonville faces the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, but having Brown around will come in handy in case he isn't.
It's still a bit early to tell whether the Dyami Brown signing will pay off, but the Jaguars should most definitely feel enthused about the early returns.
