Jacksonville Jaguars fans still probably have nightmares about when Urban Meyer coached the team. The Meyer era in Jacksonville lasted only 13 games and the Jags went a paltry 2-11 under his tutelage. Meyer was so bad in the NFL that he was fired not even one year into his Jaguars tenure and fans are still left with the scars from his time with the team.
Well, the good news is that Meyer isn't considering a return to the NFL or anywhere close to Jacksonville. Recent reports, however, have said that Meyer would be open to returning to his old stomping ground of Ohio State University, where he was the head coach from 2012 to 2018.
Former Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer could return to Ohio State
While Meyer's time in Jacksonville went about as poorly as it could have, there's no debating that he had success while coaching at the collegiate level. Meyer first started as a Division 1 head coach in 2001 when he led Bowling Green to an 8-3 record and then a 9-3 record in 2002. From there, he moved on to Utah where he coached Alex Smith and helped make him the number one pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Meyer really rose to fame during his time with the Florida Gators, where he led them to two National Championships during his six years coaching the team. He stepped away for health reasons and then joined the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2012 after one full season away from coaching. Meyer led the Buckeyes to a National Championship in 2014 and went 7-0 against Michigan, Ohio State's biggest rival.
The Ohio State/Michigan rivalry is why Meyer is even linked to rejoining a successful Buckeyes team in the first place. Meyer's successor, Ryan Day, has gone 1-4 against the Wolverines and if you can't win that rivalry, your job is on the line.
Jags fans aren't big fans of Meyer considering the state he left the team in but Doug Pederson was able to come in and clean them up the very next season. Sadly, it's been pretty much downhill since then for Pederson, but at least the Jags made the playoffs while he was at the helm. The same cannot be said for Urban Meyer who will go down as not just one of the worst coaches in Jaguars history but in NFL history as well.
