The Jacksonville Jaguars raised eyebrows in the offseason for their lack of aggressiveness. However, they were working behind the scenes to make a splash. Just weeks before the 2026 NFL Draft, the Jags have locked up one of their defensive mainstays, Travon Walker.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media just reported that Jacksonville gave a four-year deal worth $110 million to Walker, ensuring that he won't go anywhere. The former Georgia Bulldog was entering a contract year, and it looks like the team's brass wanted to lock him up before his stock went up. Adam Schefter of ESPN later added that the deal contains $77 million in guarantees and $50 million at signing.

Walker had a combined 20.5 sacks in 2023 and 2024, but injuries limited him to just 2.5 last season. But despite his unremarkable production, the Jaguars valued him enough to give him an extension. In fact, head coach Liam Coen recently talked about just how much value the Thomaston, Georgia native brings to the table, and what they expect from him moving forward.

What's next for the Jaguars after signing Travon Walker to an extension
Travon Walker was just one of several players entering contract years that the Jaguars needed to take care of. Wide receiver Parker Washington, safety Antonio Johnson, and tight end Brenton Strange were the others.
Having locked up Walker, the Jags can turn their attention to the other three. The details of the deal haven't been announced yet, but he was slated to have a cap hit of $15 million in 2026. With the extension, it's possible that the team's brass gave him a signing bonus that reduces that amount. That, in turn, could allow Jacksonville to make more moves.
Keeping Travon Walker ensures the Jaguars build an elite defense
When the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Travon Walker first overall, he was somewhat raw. Back at Georgia, he played multiple positions but never truly developed a pass-rush skillset. Couple that with the fact that he switched to standup linebacker as a rookie, and he had a long way to go. There's no doubt that the former Bulldog has made strides, but he's yet to reach his full potential. Jacksonville must be confident he will. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gotten an extension.
With Walker under contract through 2030, the Jags can turn their attention to the rest of the defense. The interior trenches and the pass rush could use reinforcements, even though Josh Hines-Allen and Arik Armstead are still around. Specifically, Jacksonville needs to bring in a defensive tackle who can pressure the quarterback from inside. The team's brass also needs to round out the rotation behind Walker and Hines-Allen.
Working in the Jags' favor is that they have 11 draft picks, four in Rounds 2 and 3, to fortify all three levels of the defense.
If the Jaguars can come out of the draft with an intriguing haul and continue to re-sign their core contributors, they should have no trouble picking up where they left off last year.
