Jaguars depth chart for Preseason Week 2 may at last put an end to WR dilemma

While there isn't a ton of mystery around the Jaguars' wide receiver room, there's still room for a fifth...and maybe sixth

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have one of the most talented wide receiver rooms in the NFL. I know, I know. It's a bold prediction, one you may not agree with, especially after one week into the preseason. But how about we talk about it?

Second-year veteran Brian Thomas, Jr., had a banner season as a rookie and looks poised to improve. Dyami Brown quietly averaged over 60 yards per game through the final five games last year. On the other hand, slot receiver Parker Washington is having a head-turning training camp.

And two-way star Travis Hunter? Tell me you're not on that hype train. I know I am.

But still, it's just the preseason. Travis Hunter hasn't played a regular-season snap yet. And I might be the only one who cares about Washington's training camp, even with highlights like this:

Either way, the top four receivers seem like a lock. But what about number five? And, maybe, six? Those are still up for grabs.

The Jaguars' preseason depth chart has answer to the WR questions

The second unofficial Jaguars depth chart reveals veteran receiver Trenton Irwin and 2024 undrafted free agent Joshua Cephus as WR5 and WR6. And that makes sense. Preseason Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers put the ball into a dozen young hands looking to prove themselves, but Irwin and Cephus stood out among the rest.

Irwin led the pack with four grabs for 48 yards—including three consecutive catches leading to a touchdown. During his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, he had somewhat middling stats: Five receiving scores in as many years and barely more than 600 yards during that span.

Cephus wasn't far behind with three receptions for 25 yards. While he didn't get into the end zone, he's entering his second year with the Jaguars—he spent much of 2024 on the practice squad—and looking to make the final 53.

The undrafted free agent was one of college football's most productive receivers during his time at UTSA, becoming the school's all-time leader in catches (313), receiving yards (3,639), and starts (56). He's worked well enough to earn head coach Liam Coen's praise: "Josh Cephus has done some good things over the course of the offseason program," said Coen after a late-May practice.

Final thoughts on Trenton Irwin and Joshua Cephus

The battle for a roster slot isn’t officially over—Week 2 will still be a chance for other fringe players to make some noise—but the early signs suggest that Jacksonville has found its answers.

If Irwin keeps moving the chains and Cephus keeps making plays like he did in college, the Jaguars will head into the regular season with a complete, versatile receiving corps ready to support Trevor Lawrence in 2025.
