Earlier this offseason, there was chatter that the Jacksonville Jaguars wanted Walker Little to compete for the starting job at left tackle. However, that no longer appears to be the case, as he made a strong impression in the offseason program. However, the same can't be said about bookend offensive tackle Anton Harrison, who hasn't been as consistent as the Jags would like.
Offensive line coach Shaun Sarrett told Mia O'Brien of 1010XL that Harrison has plenty of untapped talent but needs to be more consistent.
"Anton has done an excellent job for us. He has, you know, he's still working toward being more consistent," Sarrett responded when asked what he's seen on Anton Harrison (5:51 mark). "But he's an athletic guy. When you look at him, you're like, Man, this guy's ceiling is so high. It can be so high, but then you just want it to be every play. So, you know, it could be a little bit of a roller coaster, but he's getting better at it. He really is. He's working so hard at it."
It's worth noting that during the same exchange, Sarrett praised Little, so it's fair to say that he's not nearly as impressed with Harrison. Then again, he wasn't outright bashing him and instead noted that he has room for improvement. And that's the thing, the former Oklahoma Sooner showed in 2023 that he can deliver. However, he was underwhelming last year, registering four sacks and 31 total pressures.
Those aren't bad numbers, but the Jags surely expect more from a former first-round pick. Working in Harrison's favor is that he's getting a fresh start and much better coaching than he got under the past regime. Moreover, he still has a bit of time before the regular season begins. Then again, he's been put on notice, as he had to split first-team reps with Chuma Edoga during mandatory minicamp. It will be up to him to make the most of his chances.
Anton Harrison should start for the Jaguars (but can't rest on his laurels)
The Jacksonville Jaguars did a good job of raising the roster floor and adding competition in the offseason. The fact that several returning players now have to look over their shoulders will only make everyone better. On the other hand, a few players will have a bit of a hard time keeping up the pace. Anton Harrison may be one of them.
Harrison should have no trouble beating Chuma Edoga, a career backup, for the starting job. Having said that, he could be benched down the road if he struggles. That would, in turn, make it difficult to justify picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal or even begin contract talks in 2026.
Granted, there's plenty of time left until then, but Anton Harrison needs to put in the work to ensure that he's part of the team's long-term plans. Fending off Chuma Edoga and finding more consistency would most definitely help.
