Jaguars announce team captains for 2026 with two surprise additions

The Jacksonville Jaguars just announced their team captains for the 2026 season just days before they're set to face off against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. All five from last year return, but there are two newcomers.

The Jags posted their team captains, selected by the players, on social media and their official website. Trevor Lawrence, defensive end Josh Hines-Allen, linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, punter Logan Cooke, center Robert Hainsay, and cornerback Jourdan Lewis return from last year. They'll be joined by wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and long snapper Ross Matiscik for a total of eight captains.

The Jaguars have eight captains for the 2026 season

It's not surprising to see Trevor Lawrence be team captain for 2026. He's gotten the nod every year since his rookie season and has become the first player in team history to earn the honor six times. Before, he was tied with Brandon Linder with five.

Josh Hines-Allen, for his part, was named team captain for the fifth time in his career, and this is the third selection in a row dating back to 2024. Logan Cooke has also been a team captain in past years, specifically in 2022, 2024, and 2025. This is the first time fellow specialist Ross Matiscik has been chosen, though.

Robert Hainsay and Jourdan Lewis signed with the Jags in the 2025 free agency and have been named captain each of the past two years. On the other hand, Jakobi Meyer landed in Duval via trade last year. This is the first time he's got the nod in Jacksonville and in his career.

The Jaguars may have named too many captains

This is a matter of opinion, and there's no doubt that all eight Jaguars who were named captains deserved the honor. But that's too many captains; it waters down the overall impact of receiving the honor.

Now, there isn't a perfect number of captains; three could be too low, and eight is too many, but five feels like just the right amount, as only the five most deserving players on the team will be chosen.

On the other hand, of all the players who were named captains in Jacksonville, it would be hard to remove one from the list. All eight were deemed worthy by their teammates and were chosen for a reason. Moreover, if the Jaguars chose eight captains, it doesn't matter what those outside the building believe.

In the end, what matters is that the Jaguars believe that their eight captains are capable of leading the team next season.
