The 2025 season is officially over for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it was a season that left the fan base with a lot of excitement. While the end was disappointing, with the Jaguars losing a winnable Wild Card game to the Buffalo Bills, fans have to be excited about the future under head coach Liam Coen.

Jacksonville did nearly everything right over the last year, from hiring Coen and James Gladstone to pulling off trades for Travis Hunter and Jakobi Meyers. Unfortunately, the Jaguars did have one misstep that they likely regret.

Back in October, ahead of the trade deadline, Jacksonville sent cornerback Tyson Campbell and a seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Greg Newsome II and a sixth-round pick. With how things unfolded, Jacksonville probably wants a do-over of that deal.

Jaguars’ trade for Greg Newsome II didn’t go as planned

In Cleveland, Campbell fit right in on the Browns’ elite defense, providing quality play opposite of perennial Pro Bowl corner Denzel Ward. To make things even better for Cleveland, Campbell is under contract until 2029. All things considered, the Browns would make the trade 10 times out of 10.

The same can’t be said for the Jaguars, because Newsome has had a tough time in Jacksonville. The veteran corner is talented and has had some promising moments. On the other hand, he has also given up too many big plays during his short time with the team. In 12 games with the Jaguars, he was targeted 59 times, giving up 37 completions for 452 yards and five touchdowns. The playoff loss was also a game to forget for Newsome.

The corner is also set to enter free agency this offseason, which is tough for him since it’s after a down year, but good for the Jaguars since it won’t cost them anything to move on. However, the team has to wonder how things would have been if it still had Tyson Campbell for several more years.

The good news, though, is that Jacksonville already has some answers at cornerback heading into next season. Two-way sensation Travis Hunter and veteran Jourdan Lewis should both be healthy for the start of next season, and both were playing well when they were on the field this season. They should be able to help the Jaguars get right back in the mix next year.
