When the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Liam Coen as their head coach in 2025, one of the biggest challenges he had was to get the most out of Trevor Lawrence. It's fair to say both of them rose to the occasion.

Under Coen, Lawrence had the best statistical season of his career, registering over 4,000 passing yards and a personal-best 38 total touchdowns.

No. 16 is now poised to pick up where he left off last season. And based on Coen's latest remarks, he should be even better in 2026.

Liam Coen thinks Trevor Lawrence will be better in 2026

Liam Coen made an appearance on Sirius XM and said that he was impressed with Trevor Lawrence when he became the head coach in Jacksonville, praising his toughness amid the lack of continuity at head coach.

"Going into the process, from watching tape, I was like, 'Alright, this dude is tough.' I do think he's tough," Coen said. "I mean, takes shots, gets up, doesn't say a word, has played hurt, has missed time. Look, four new systems, multiple different head coach situations, OCs, whatever it is. Go throughout the season, doesn't miss a single practice. Doesn't miss a single throw in practice, played the whole season. Obviously, MVP, finalist, Comeback Player of the Year, finalist, did some great things."

Coen continued, "There's so much room to continue to him, yeah, and I think that's what we're excited about attacking. But when you start with A) humility and B) toughness, mentally and physically, I think he can do a lot with a quarterback. And we've spent a lot of time in San Francisco, at the Super Bowl together and going through that week, and I got to see a different side of him, hang out with him in a different lens. And I think I'm really excited about working with Trevor again this year."

When Coen arrived in Jacksonville, Lawrence had already had two head coaches. First, Urban Meyer and later Doug Pederson. The former had no idea of what he was doing, while the latter helped No. 16 improve, but still left a bit to be desired.

Lawrence, for his part, had dealt with injuries in back-to-back seasons, and it looked like he was sometimes trying to do too much, which led to mistakes and not-so-great decision-making. That's why 2025 was seen as a make-or-break year for him.

With Coen leading the way, Lawrence had to work on his football and learned the most complex system he had had in his career. Then the regular season came, and he was off to a rocky start. But somewhere along the way, a switch flipped, and the former Clemson Tiger went on to finish strong, completing over 60 percent of his throws with 15 touchdowns and just one interception in the last seven games.

Trevor Lawrence is ready to put the Jaguars on his shoulders

Following his impressive 2025, Trevor Lawrence is in a position to be even better next season. Unlike last year, he's not recovering from any injuries. Moreover, he will no longer have to work on his footwork or any of his mechanics. And last but not least, the sixth-year quarterback has a firmer grasp of Liam Coen's scheme.

When you add it all up, Lawrence should be even better next year. Heck, don't be surprised if he joins the MVP conversation at some point of the regular season. But more importantly, he should help the Jaguars make a deep playoff push.

Liam Coen seems to be believe is up to the task, based on his latest remarks.
