Jaguars keep hoarding talent at receiver with CJ Williams pick at No. 203

If anyone in Jacksonville is happy right now, it's Trevor Lawrence

The Jacksonville Jaguars have decided to be much more active on Day 3 of the draft, and a benefit of that has been a run on receiving talent. With their latest pick, the Jags selected Stanford wide receiver CJ Williams, a player who will probably be competing for a depth spot and some time on special teams.

Chad Reuter of NFL Media highlighted Williams' potential before the draft, claiming that the young wideout was a standout performer in the East-West Shrine Bowl. StickToTheModel has a favorable opinion of the Stanford alum as well, as they identified him as an undervalued prospect during the scouting process.

This late into the process, fans can only hope for a guy who can surprise us and make a name for himself the hard way. Judging by others' commentary, Williams shouldn't have a problem making the most of his reps.

The Jaguars fortify the receiving core with CJ Williams

When you consider Josh Cameron's selection just a few picks before, it's clear the Jags have a plan to revamp the entire identity of the offense. They drafted tight end Tanner Koziol earlier in the day to take advantage of openings in the slot and Nate Boerkircher to open holes for the running game.

It's rare for a draft pick to be boxed out by his own classmates, but this has been an unorthodox draft, to say the least. The Californian caught 59 passes for 749 yards and six touchdowns during his best and final season as a collegian, so he showed signs that he can thrive after having some time to develop.

How does CJ Williams fit with the Jaguars moving forward?

Even if Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington have the worst seasons of their careers, it's highly unlikely that Williams will see the field as a receiver during his rookie year. To be honest, the need to keep so many tight ends on the roster could push the 203rd-overall pick to the practice squad.

Of course, it's still early, and Williams hasn't even touched ground in Duval County yet. I imagine that the 6-foot-1, 205-pound athlete could be a dark horse to take over for one of the slot receivers in the future. If true, spending a year on the practice squad would be the perfect strategy.

In any case, the Jaguars have never had this much depth in their receiving core, regardless of position. We should enjoy it while we can, because the Jags will eventually have to cut this thing down.

We'll see how it shakes out!
