During the 2025 offseason, it looked like the Jacksonville Jaguars had assembled an offensive juggernaut. With Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter, Parker Washington, and Dyami Brown on offense, it looked like Trevor Lawrence had no shortage of weapons. But then, the regular season came, and the Jags struggled with drops.

Looking for a fix, Jacksonville traded for Jakobi Meyers at the deadline. With him in the mix, the offense showed immediate improvement. This is why the Jags didn't hesitate to give him a contract extension. However, the decision has come into question on a recent list.

Jakobi Meyers was dubbed the Jaguars' most overpaid player after free agency

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report drew up a list of every team's most overpaid player after free agency and chose Jakobi Meyers for the Jaguars, noting that the former Wolfpack has limited upside after landing in Jacksonville last year and signing a contract extension.

"An AFC South run on receivers continues with a seven-year veteran who has scored just seven touchdowns the last two seasons combined and has just one 1,000-yard campaign on his resume but is one of 23 members of the $20 million-a-year wide receiver club," Gagnon wrote. "There's limited upside ahead of Meyer's age-30 campaign in Jacksonville."

For context, Nico Collins (Houston Texans) and Alec Pierce (Indianapolis Colts) also popped up on the list. Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. was the only AFC South non-quarterback who made the cut.

Circling back to Meyers, he joined the Jaguars at the 2025 trade deadline. Right off the bat, he fixed the drop issues that had been plaguing them throughout the year. And that's the thing, Jacksonville doesn't expect the North Carolina State to become an All-Pro but rather give Trevor Lawrence a trusted target in the middle that's not afraid to get hit. Right off the bat, he proved to be that player, which is why the Jags didn't hesitate to give him the contract extension he had been looking for.

See, Meyers signed a three-year deal worth $30 million with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 after spending four seasons with the New England Patriots. He quickly became a mainstay of their offense and even posted the first 1,000-yard season of his career in 2024.

Entering a contract year in 2025, Meyers wanted to get an extension. Once he saw that the Raiders weren't interested in granting his demands, he requested a trade and was eventually shipped to Jacksonville in return for a fourth-round pick and a sixth-rounder.

Now, Meyers is part of a stacked wide receiver corps that includes Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter, and Parker Washington.

The Jaguars feel great about their investment in Jakobi Meyers

You could make the case that the Jaguars overpaid Jakobi Meyers after reeling in just 42 catches for 483 yards with three touchdowns in 2025. But the truth is that his arrival provided the much-needed stability the Jacksonville offense lacked early in the regular season.

Moreover, Meyers should post even better numbers next season, not only because he'll get to play all 17 games for Jacksonville but also because he'll get the benefit of having a full offseason to work with Trevor Lawrence and truly soak up Liam Coen's offense. Imagine just how much better he could be.

Jakobi Meyers proved to be a valuable contributor in 2025, and expecting him to have an even bigger impact isn't far-fetched but rather reasonable.
